Best psychedelic pop album of the year
Anyone that knows, or has worked out, that I love psychedelic music of all sorts, and especially King Gizz could see why this went straight to the top of my yearly chart on first listen. They may swim in the same pool as King Gizz, Tame Impala, and Pond, but they are swimming in the deep end. I reckon they have had many many stoned jams where they have absolutely loved creating music inspired by the greats of psychedelic rock and pop both old and new. And I think this love shows throughout the record. They seem to have a sense of knowing what they are doing, which is surprising for a debut album from a young band, coming with a sense of humour, with song titles like Intro, Fuzz Jam, and Cheesy Love Song which actually are an intro, a fuzz jam, and a chessy love song respectively. Fuzz Jam was my favourite song of 2021 by the way. Anyway love the vocals but even the instrumental tracks are great. There is not a weak tune on here - high quality all the way through. Best Australian album of the year
King Gizzard has offered us another smorgasbord full of delectable treats. Much like Oddments and Gumboot Soup it is a collection of songs in the various genres they have been mucking around with over the years, and even a new one in terms of old school hip hop a la The Beastie Boys. This provides a lot of variety and an album that works both as a listen to front to back, or one that could be shuffled. It may go for an hour and twenty minutes but it doesn't feel that long, especially as my favourite song here (as a fan of their early extended jams period) the opening track The Dripping Tap takes up nearly twenty minutes of that runtime. Best indie rock alt-country album of the year
The guitarist from Ruby Fields goes out on his own with this debut album. A little bit alt-country, and a little bit folk rock singer-songwriter. Some very good songwriting and I love his gravelly voice that sounds like it's coming from someone whose been around for a long time, not a young newcomer. I really enjoyed this album with the passionate bittersweet Sweetness a stand out. It was a top 10 song for me for 2021 and why I checked out this album. Singing Blackbird is also great, and the positive vibes of Southern Comfort is nice way to end the album leaving you with a warm feeling. But all of the songs are likeable here, and with only 8 of them it's 30 minutes I'll happily spend again. [First added to this chart: 06/10/2022]

Always a delight to check out your charts and your 'classification' system. Equally nice to see a good percentage of Aussie albums make the cut - personally, I think you should have more Aussie albums: but hey, I'm super-biased.
