Dylan covers 1: top 100 Dylan cover songs by Moondance

This chart reveals/uncovers the incredibly rich and diverse realm of Bob Dylan cover songs. One estimate puts the number of Dylan cover songs to be over 105,000; however my own research suggests that the number of verified, publicly available number of Dylan cover songs is closer to 10,000! In any event, to make a chart of my top 100 Dylan cover songs is both hard & easy.
To fully acknowledge and represent this diversity and to cover Dylan's entire 60 year recording career, I set certain parameters:
* Limit any artist to only one cover song;
* Limit any Dylan tribute album to only one cover song ~ Note: the number/diversity of Dylan tribute albums discovered during the making of this chart has amazed me. Despite having listened to over 50 tribute album, including the 30 tribute albums listed in this chart, I have only scratched the surface {elsewhere on the BEA site I am aware of a user who has a 'top 100 chart of 100% Dylan cover albums'; and during my research, I stumbled across a website that listed over 400 albums comprising between 50% - 100% Dylan cover songs};
* For Dylan albums with only a small number of original songs (eg 'Bob Dylan'; 'Greatest Hits Vol II'; 'Self Portrait'; 'Masterpieces'; 'Knocked Out Loaded' etc), this chart includes at least one cover song to showcase those albums;
* For each of the 27 Dylan albums that contain all or mostly original songs, this chart includes between two - four cover songs with the exception of 'Under The Red Sky' ~ for which finding quality cover songs proved a challenge and thus only one cover song is included in this chart;
* In other words, every Dylan album that includes, in part or in full, original songs is referenced in this chart (at last count, that added up to 40 Dylan albums);
* Some songs written/co-written by Dylan but never recorded by Dylan have been included in this chart (eg Clapton, Goffin, O'Keefe);
* Dylan side projects (eg Traveling Wilbury's, movie soundtracks) have also been included in this chart, to give this chart the most comprehensive feel that I could put together.
The order of the chart listing will be chronological - based on the release date of the corresponding contemporaneous studio album or the recording date for those songs that were released much later on compilation albums (Greatest Hits VolII, Masterpieces), the 1975 Basement Tapes or the various Bootleg Series albums.
The only exception to the chronological order is the #1 entry by Linda Mason, which is recognised as the first album to be released that was 100% dedicated to covering the songs of Bob Dylan.
The data in this chart - eg number of times Dylan has performed a particular song in concert is as at June 2023.

Girl From The North Country: The Waterboys have released 17 albums over a career spanning 1983 to the present (2022). On their career spanning 145 track/5CD/1DVD 'The Magnificnet Seven' box set, The Waterboys do an absolutely beautiful cover of Dylan's 'Girl From The North Country' ~ refer CD2, track 11. There is also 'live' footage of them performing 'Girl From The North Country' at Glastonbury 1989 (song 3 on the DVD) ~ a song they have performed 'live' on at least 50 occasions.
Dylan recorded 'Girl From The North Country' on 24 April 1963 and it was released one month later (side 1, track 2) on his May 1963 'Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' album. The song was re-recorded in February 1969 ~ this time with Johnny Cash duetting with Dylan ~ and the version opens up Dylan's April 1969 'Nashville Skyline' album.
Dylan has performed 'Girl From The North Country' over 580 times including on the Canadian "Quest" TV program - aired on 10 March 1964 - and the Johnny Cash Show on 1 May 1969. It Ain't Me Babe: Although this 2CD/21 track tribute album to Dylan, performed by artists on the Drive-Thru Records roster, was issued in 2005, the cover songs are drawn exclusively from Dylan's 60's (19 songs) and 70's (2 songs) anthology. On CD2, track 2, David Melillo (former bassist for Cute Is What We Aim For) does a commendable version of Dylan's 'It Ain't Me Babe'.
Dylan recorded 'It Ain't Me Babe' on 9 June 1964 and it was released (side 2, track 5) on his August 1965 'Another Side of Bob Dylan' album.
Dylan first performed 'It Ain't Me Babe' on 19 April 1964 at Westchester County Center, White Plains, NY and it remained on the song list until pushed off during the post 'Highway 61 Revisited' acoustic/electric 1966 world tour with The Hawks. The song found favour again from 1975 onwards, apart from the gospel song inspired concerts of 1979-80. The songs most recent performance was on 8 December 2019 at The Anthem, Washington DC ~ where a number of often performed songs were 'put on hold' to provide space for the 'Rough & Rowdy Ways' songs to be showcased in concert.
Played 'live' on 1070 occasions, 'It Ain't Me Babe' rates as the 8th most performed song in Dylan's almost 60 years on concert performances.

Lay Lady Lay: The Mighty Diamonds are a Jamaican harmony trio with 36 studio albums released between 1976 - 2008.
On this 14 track compilation reggae tribute album to Dylan (mostly covering songs from Dylan's 60's anthology), the Mighty Diamonds do a delightfully sensuous version of 'Lay Lady Lay' (track 4) & the 'you tube' video of the song is equally sensuous. The tribute album concludes, interestingly enough, with a 5m 46s reggae remix of Dylan's 'I And I'
Dylan recorded 'Lay Lady Lay' in mid February 1969 ~ originally to be included as the theme song for 'Midnight Cowboy', but it arrived too late to be included in the movie. Instead, 'Lay Lady Lay' was released (side 2, track 1) on Dylan's April 1969 'Nashville Skyline' album. The song was also released as a single in July 1969, reaching #5 in the UK; #7 in the US & New Zealand; and #18 in Australia.
Dylan first performed 'Lay Lady Lay' at his Isle of Wight concert (31 August 1969) and it was a feature (song 2 on the set list) of his 1974 US tour with The Band. 'Lay Lady Lay' has been performed over 410 times ~ with its last performance on 27 November 2010 at MGM Grand at Foxwoods, Mashantucket, CT.

Forever Young: In this posthumous compilation of 20 tracks from Marc's post Dragon solo career, track 13 is a beautiful rendition of Dylan's 'Forever Young'. Interestingly, the song does not appear on any of Marc's solo albums, yet this album bears the name of this song - perhaps an appropriate sign off to a true talent from NZ - who died in July 1998 (aged 44).
Dylan recorded a demo version of 'Forever Young' in June 1973 ¬ and this was released as the final track (side 10, track 5) on November 1985 'Biograph' 5LP boxset. With a new Asylum Records recording contract, Dylan headed west (Village Recorders studio, Santa Monica) with The Band and recorded two versions of 'Forever Young' in early November 1973 and both versions were released (side 1, track 6 ¬ slow version; side 2, track 1 ¬ fast version) on his January 1974 'Planet Waves' album.
Dylan immediately included 'Forever Young' in his concert set list and it received its premiere performance at the first concert of Dylan's 1974 US/Canada concert tour with The Band ¬ Chicago Stadium, Chicago ¬ on 3 January 1974. The song has been played over 450 times in concert, although it has rarely been performed since 2011.

Tangled Up In Blue: Indigo Girls, featuring Drag The River, take on the iconic Tangled Up In Blue on this 12 track Dylan tribute, issued by Sister Ruby Records, featuring American singers/songwriters that were making their mark in the late 80's.
Dylan recorded several version of 'Tangled Up In Blue', the first versions being on 12 & 19 September 1974 at A&R Studios, NY ~ the latter of these was subsequently released (side 1, track 1) on the 2018 "Bootleg Series Vol 14: More Blood, More Tracks". Dylan recorded a final version, produced by his brother David Zimmerman, at Sound 80 Studio in Minneapolis on 27 December 1974 and it was this version that was released (side 1, track 1) on his highly celebrated 1975 'Blood On The Tracks' album. The single of 'Tangled Up In Blue' reached #31 on the US charts.
'Tangled Up In Blue' was first performed in concert on 13 November 1975 (Veterans Memorial Coliseum, New Haven, Connecticut) and as at July 2022 has been performed over 1700 times, making it the 4th most performed song in Dylan concert history.

Pressing On: This 11 track tribute to Dylan's 'Gospel' period (ie 5 songs from 1979's 'Slow Train Coming' album & 6 songs from 1980's 'Saved' album), was nominated for the Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album at the 2004 Grammys. At track 8, the Chicago Mass Choir, and featuring Regina McCrary in leasd vocal, do the most magnificent cover version of Dylan's 'Pressing On'. Regina is an excellent choice for this song as she provided backing vocals for the entire series of Dylan concerts between 1979-81 ~ those that had either a total or a major focus on the songs released on the so-called 'gospel' albums. Regina was also engaged to provide backing vocals on Dylan's 1981 'Shot Of Love' album.
Dylan recorded ;Pressing On' on 13 February 1980 and it was released (track 6) on his June 1980 'Saved' album.
Dylan first performed 'Pressing On' at Fox Warfield Theatre, San Francisco on 1 November 1979 and in every concert thereafter up to Memorial Hall, Dayton, Ohio on 21 May 1980. The song was always the final song on the set list and performed 69 times during that period. Interestingly, those concert performances pre-date the release of the the studio album ~ 'Saved' on 28 June 1980. For whatever reason, Dylan has not perform this song 'live' since it became commercially available.

Blind Willie McTell: This 4CD compilation, comprising 73 cover songs over 5hrs 21mins, spans Dylan's career between his debut 1962 'Bob Dylan' album to 1997's 'Time Out Of Mind'. The 73 artists involved in this project is extraordinary and they each do a contemporary studio recording for the sole purpose of celebrating Dylan's songwriting craft & Amnesty's fight for human rights. The tribute album debuted at #11 on the US charts.
At CD1, track 5 ~ The Nightwatchman ~ (aka Tom Morello post his tenure with Rage Against The Machine & Audioslave) ~ does a magnificent version of Dylan's 'Blind Willie McTell'
Dylan (on piano) with Mark Knopfler (acoustic guitar) recorded 'Blind Willie McTell' on 5 May 1983 during the sessions for the 'Infidels' album. The song was not included on the album as Dylan felt that is was not quite complete. Consequently, the recording lay dormant until released (Vol 3, track 14) on the March 1991 'Bootleg Series Vol 1 - 3 (Rare & Unreleased)' box set.
Dylan had not considered performing the song in concert until hearing The Band performing the song in concert during the 1990's ~ they also included a studio version of their 1993 'Jericho' album. And so it came to be that Dylan began playing 'Blind Willie McTell' in concert from 5 August 1997 (Stade duMaurier, Montreal, QC) and it has since been played over 225 times since ~ with it's last outing on 17 June 2017 (Firefly Music Festival, Dover, DE).
On a personal note ~ I am glad that 'Blind Willie McTell' was eventually released ~ it is one of my favourite of all Dylan songs.

Got My Mind Made Up: Langhorne Slim & The Law.
This 17 track tribute album ~ devoted to 'likeable but largely overlooked songs' from Dylan's 80's period ~ features US based indie/alternative folk artists/bands.
The opening track has US singer/songwriter Langhorne Slim & The Law doing an impressive cover of Dylan's 'Got My Mind Made Up'.
Dylan recorded 'Got My Mind Made Up' ~ a song co-written with Tom Petty ~ in May 1986 and it was released (side 2, track 2) on his widely panned July 1986 'Knocked Out Loaded' album. In fact "Rolling Stone" called the album "the absolute bottom of the Dylan barrel".
"Knocked Out Loaded" only had five original songs ~ three of them co-written with others ~ and has not fared well on "cover versions" - so the Langhorne Slim 'find' is a real blessing.
Dylan has only performed 'Got My Mind Made Up' once ~ Sports Arena, San Diego, CA on 9 June 1986.

Life Is Hard: Caecilie Norby is a Danish jazz & rock singer who has been releasing studio & live albums, either with bands or solo, since the mid 1980's. On her 2020 compilation album ('Portraying'), Caecilie covers songs from 16 of her favourite artists (including Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Dolly Parton, Leonard Cohen, CCR). At track 2, Caecilie does an excellent rendition of Dylan's 'Life Is Hard'. Caecilie's's album also goes under the title: 'Hidden Treasures/Unreleased Tracks' on YouTube.
Dylan co-wrote 'Life Is Hard' with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The song was written for the Olivier Dahan directed movie 'My Own Love Story', which features Renee Zellweger ~ and Renee sings the song in the movie.
Dylan recorded 'Life Is Hard' in December 2008, and as well as featuring in the movie, it was also released (track 2) on his April 2009 'Together Through Life' album. The album charted at #1 in the US & UK and (at the time) gave Dylan (aged 67yrs, 11mths) the distinction of being the oldest living artist to do so ~ nudging out Neil Diamond, who reached #1 in the US & UK with his May 2008 'Home After Dark' album, when Neil was 67yrs, 3mths.
Dylan has never performed 'Life Is Hard' in concert.
