"A soothing, haunting sound from beginning to end. This album invokes so much feeling and emotion, and if I feel like listening to it I have to listen to it completely through every time. Songs like "Cutting My Fingers Off" and "I Would Hate You if I Could" cut deep and are absolutely gut wrenching and resonating. In comparison to "Magnolia", their first release, you can hear their transition from alternative rock to the shoegaze genre and I think they have truly found their place. Songs like, "New Scream" seem as they're coming straight out of 90's MTV video. Anyone suffering from heartbreak or knows the feeling will definitely appreciate songs like, "Diazepam" or "Like Slow Disappearing". They hit at the soul for me every time. I can't think of a bad song on this album. I recommend this album to everyone and will continue to for a long time. If you haven't listened to it, I would suggest you really try it out if you are a fan of the genre."  [+]  Reply

Good grief, what a beautiful voice. It's a raw confronting experience somewhere in the vicinity of an ego death, attacking parts of my psyche that were laying dormant. There's so much gravity here that it demands complete attention and doesn't work any other way. She's one of those rare artists that seems to have the ability to connect a transmitter directly from her brain into yours. Her lyrics are like those weird fuzzy early morning thoughts you have as you're waking up, where it feels like you're solving some really important internal puzzle and everything is equal and nothing is taboo and your conscious identity hasn't fully uploaded yet so the real fundamental essence of what you are has a chance to- damn, it's gone. It's not so much that her music is otherworldly and escapist, it's more like she draws your attention to the strange ambiguous elements of what it means to be a human being in waking life. The kind of thing your brain likes to shift its awareness away from whenever it can in favour of the mundane. Apocalypse, Girl is a temporary escape into reality."  [+]  Reply

Fading Frontier is nothing short of rallying cry for the sick & disabled. Anthems to get you fired up that you are important. That you matter. That no one is defined by anything or limited by anything. That one can surpass labels and diagnoses. And do something amazing. Pretty impressive for a pop album. And this is a pop album at its heart. And it works. Anthems were made to be heard on FM radio after all. And in a different universe, those first three songs would be staples on the radio. Not all the songs work. Snakeskin’s 70s T-Rex stomp has never quite won me over. But, the rest is near perfect indie pop. Grade: A. This is essential indie pop. These are songs for when the world wrongs you. For when you’re not understood. For when people don’t recognize the strength it takes to just keep on fighting and instead only sees weakness. Illness. It contains powerful vocals, tra...""This is a really, really solid debut album from an established Nashville songwriter. The issue is, I think I want to like it more than I actually do. This album is a step in the right direction in terms of steering the "main stream country music" ship back around. It contains powerful vocals, traditional outlaw instrumentation, even videos surfacing of Bill Murray, fist in the air, enthusiastically singing along. Most importantly the album doesn't feel the need to marginalize, in an effort reach the populous. Still, there is something that doesn't quite resonate with me, and I fail to ever really connect emotionally. I'd have to do a little research, but I'm sure Stapleton broke the record for most whiskey references in a single album. I think that shallow subject matter, while it makes for a couple good songs, is the reason the album feels a little one dimensional. That being said, i like the album for what it is, and its head and shoulders above the majority of its contemporaries. There are some really good tracks like "Daddy Doesn't Pray" and "The Devil Named Music" but "Fire Away" is in contention for one of my favorite songs of the year. "  [+]  Reply
