"One of the most promising artists of the decade finally comes through with the album we’ve been waiting for. This thing is soulful, funky, gritty, sexy, and even funny."  Reply

"Their classic album and brilliant introduction to the warped perfectionism of Lawrence Felt. As well as All the People I Like Are Those That Are Dead, A Wave Crashed on Rocks, and Hours of Darkness Have Changed My Mind are highlights."  Reply

"There are a lot of skits, jokes, bantering and general foolin' around on this album. These guys have skills, but don't really start showin' them off sans distractions until their roller skating jam. I applaud their attempt at abstraction and lack of typical song structure, but it often just comes..."  [+]  Reply

"A fantastic jazz fusion album that really stunned me on first listen and I have been hooked ever since. The performances on this album are just amazing and some of the solos on here are just astounding. Every instrument seems to be played so well and each has their own individual moment to shine...."  [+]  Reply

"Probably better than, keep the faith, these days, has again a more mature sound than it's predecessor. The same old Bon Jovi in there's some decent pop songs, and other tracks they try hard to be taken more seriously and although it's all very competent, there's really nothing spectacular here. I..."  [+]  Reply

"Well this came out of nowhere! It's simple, but alluring piano passages combined with found sounds that is magically and movingly transportive. "Lanegan has one of greatest rock voices of all times, and he uses it at his best on this album. A blast from beginning till end, and another great duet (this time with PJ Harvey). Would trade this album for the entire top 20 of 2004, apart from the Arcade Fire and Nick Cave albums."  Reply

"I think I'm halfway in-between the earlier comments. While this album isn't an all-time favourite and some of the covers struggle, it's also not a poorly executed flop. Their covers of Renegades of Funk and How I Could Just Kill a Man aren't better than the originals, but take them in an entirely..."  [+]  Reply

"There's a review that criticizes these songs as mere character sketches in which "very little happens." If that's what you're taking away from these songs, you're just not listening. I've said it before, but his ability to create a whole world in four minutes is masterful."  Reply
