I enjoy the unforced choruses and especially the little electronic flourishes like in "breathin underwater". Track "youth without youth" is definitely the synth-rock standout here, but comparable tracks abound. Some songs have multiple chorus-like moments. This was a definite pleasant-surprise "WOWser!" album from an artist i've been casually following for a while and honestly didn't think could pull off an album this good."[+]Reply

The premise revolves around a sunken slave ship that crashes and the slaves live free lives underwater, hence slaves=waves. The production on a lot of songs has a crazy aquatic vibe and Lupe bounces off the beats effortlessly incorporating some of his sharpest wordplay - littered with double entendre, analogy, and structural patters. It hasn't been out long but already my favorite Lupe project and maybe one of my favorite concept albums ever.

Their follow up to the immensely popular Sixteen Stone has less huge hit singles and more filler.
Mouth, Cold Contagious, and Swallowed are top notch Grunge/Alt Songs.
The rest of this is merely passable if you love the genre. If you don't love the genre, all of this is below average musicianship and skippable.
I was a pretty big Bush fan growing up but I'm wiser now and recognize their place in music is not all that high.
This is their worst album and other than the debut, all are average or below average"[+]Reply

Harking back to the acoustic sparseness of the, Nebraska, and, ghost of Tom Joad, albums, although there is a lot more band instrumentation this time around. The title track, is excellent, and the best song on the album. It's kind of a re-write of Bob Dylan's, with God on our side. Other strong acoustic tracks are the beautiful, Leah, the lovely, black cowboys, and the boxing drama, the hitter. All the way home, is the most band-like song on the record, and that particular track was recorded during the human touch/lucky town sessions. Other highlights are, Reno, which wouldn't have been out of place on the, Tom Joad, album, there's also the bluesy rock'n'roll of, all I'm thinkin'about, and the wonderful closing track, matamoros banks. Maria's bed, is great fun, similar to, Mary's place, on, the rising, but this time more country than Motown. The only weak tracks are, silver palomino, and, Jesus was an only son, but that's just my personal opinion. Devils & dust, isn't an essential Springsteen album, but it is another piece of the puzzle. Good stuff. "[+]Reply

Now, the slower-tempo'd songs are still catchy with multiple choruses, but they're just not the toe tappers like from the previous 3 albums. But you wouldn't know it from opener "my rights versus yours" which has a slow build, but the payoff is worth it with those neko harmonies and backing vox and the feel once again of multiple choruses. "all the things that go to make heaven and earth" is another song that recalls previous albums -- with its rapid procession, multiple choruses and lovely neko backing vocals -- as does stellar "mutiny, i promise you" (here' the mutiny neko promised you!). Mid-tempo "all the old showstoppers" is just as catchy as their earlier stuff (w/ neko!) except the instrumental parts blunt momentum. "challengers" is where you first notice the shift. Fronted beautifully by neko case [ 8-) ], it's a nicely, understated sort-of love song ("Another vision of us / We were the challengers of the unknown") that you won't find on the first 3 albums. Ballad "go places" is a warm invitation from neko to "come with me / go places". "failsafe", another neko-fronted number (she seems to hoard the ballads on this album), is another pr0n ballad, but falls flat. At least "unguided" has some energy with that organ synth and catchy chorus ("Something's unguided in the sky tonight..."), but goes on too long. Elsewhere, "myriad harbour" is a good, if a bit muddled, affair from bejar with only 1 chorus (shocker!) and harmonica that sounds a bit out of place. (Neko's the best part of that song, of course.) In summary, i like my porn served with a heaping helping of vim & vigor, and the down-tempo plays on challengers don't do as much for me. Bejar's pun song "entering white cecilia" falls flat with no strong new pr0n hook to sink into. Overall, i wish A.C. would up the beat and allow neko more front time on the upbeat numbers -- she's too strong and sultry of a personality to leave on comparatively-middling numbers like "failsafe" and "adventures in solitude""[+]Reply

It takes the furocity of Pantera, the groove/classic-rock influence of COC, and combines it with the underground metalcore of Eyehategod/Crowbar to create an epic, southern influenced heavy-metal album. This is heavy-metal with a soul to the music. The music is blistering, groovy, and introspective, often all within the same song. This is the sound of 5 veterans of heavy-metal, who are good friends, making a real record and letting their classic-rock influences flow and one helluva jam session. Gritty, passionate, real metal-music...it's a masterpiece."[+]Reply
