It's good that Ms. Phair is taking chances on her records. I think with a little more time in the studio she could have produced a better album. This record is very uneven with some great and not so great tracks.

Liz Phair has had an inconsistent career. Exile in Guyville was such a shot across the bow for the music industry and for female artists. Whip-Smart was dull and unfocused. He latest work reeks of misdirection and sell-out. On Whitechocolatespaceegg, Liz Phair feels confident enough to experiment, moving away from her first two albums, but she doesn't feel like she owes anyone anything. This album has its weak moments, but the peaks are monumental - Polyester Bride and Johnny Feelgood are among her best, and you can't argue with the rollicking tempo of Baby Got Going. Solid work by an inconsistent artist.
