Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. From their first album (``Boy``) on i became one of their biggest admirers . From the mid 90`s on they became pretentious , too ``Pop` and thus irrelevant .

I wish I liked this band more than I do. As a guitarist, I find The Edge's style to be an inspiration, as well as being instantly recognisable. No-one else plays like him or makes the sounds that he makes with the instrument. I even like Bono's voice and some of his lyrics. The rhythm section is also very strong. But there's something about them as a whole that doesn't click with me, except here and there. The one album I feel completely sold on is Achtung Baby, which is brilliant. Trying again with some of their other work currently. I guess we'll see.
Whatever you might think of Bono, you can't deny that U2 have had an immesurable impact on music and popular culture in the last 40 years. The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are two of the best and most influential records that have been released in rock history and albums such as War, The Unforgettable Fire and the (IMO) underrated Pop are also worth checking out
U2 are a tough band to rate, at least for me. I love some of their songs and have All That You Can't Leave Behind in my top 100 of all time. I do think some of their other albums are over-rated - maybe 2-3 good songs with lots of filler. Still, overall, they have created music, lyrics and a feel that (sometimes) takes me somewhere special - and for that I am grateful.

U2 have produced some great records over the years and were one of the greatest band ever in their heyday, though the more recent output is only average. I do wish people would rate a band by it's music not it's politics or it's ability to annoy everyone in sight. There are many bands capable of this extraordinary incompetence, Nickleback, Kanye West and Creed spring to mind. U2 were great, they deserve a high rating, recent releases are not up to their previous standards, not surprising and not a reason to give them a silly rating now.
Gets too much hate imo, not perfect, but they have some pretty solid stuff in their discog.
