Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

hey man thanks for the feedback, i really dig your chart, answering to your questions i have been a huge mats fans since I discovered let it be about 7 years ago by coincidence, about the hold steady I've been trying to listen them for some time now particularly an album that was fairly recommended to met which is called boys and girls in america (I think that's the right name, not sure right now) but beacuse I live in a third world country which doesn't bring all the albums that one may want I haven't been able to get it and I didn't want to downloaded it although I might in the next days.
