Top 36 Greatest Music Albums by buckchilly

First and foremost I haven't nearly listened to enough music to warrant an all time top album list, and until I can do 100 I'll stick to one album per band (so there will be some shifting)
But what I've tried not to do is let what I've been listening to recently to bias this chart, using my last.fm and record collection as basis alongside my favourites of the last few years.
As with all charts there's a story behind every album and a why I connect with it.

A stunning work by an incredible band. This album saw their visceral side come to the front to stand side by side with mesmerising beauty. They had never rocked so hard and on such extended pieces. Sadly it all went downhill from this. The pinnacle for which the band are rarely praised.

If the myths are to believed an album made to mock prog rock excessiveness becomes one of its greatest gems. Spellbinding from the get go, and essentially one song spread over two sides. It swells and builds before lulling the listener into a false safety before the bombastic brilliance comes round full swing. Captivating in every musical note.

Taking the British whimsicalness of their previous outings to new heights. They may have found critical acclaim awaiting on their next album but this is where they reached a creative peak and a sense of unity which would never be reproduced.

That magic moment when a band just clicked. Fragile showed glimpses of what was to come but this blew it all away. Bruford left stating that it couldn't be bettered, and he was right. The title track is the perfect example of a band firing on all cylinders.

As a small child my parents played me this album, it's stuck with me. It's one man's musical vision carried out with meticulous precision. He ended up spending the rest of his career trying to emulate this album, only Ommadawn came close.

IV may have the better songs but it's the musical freedom they show on this release that does it for me. They express their prowess at out-and-out rockers to folk to reggae and all in between. No Quarter stands as an all time career high for band with many career highs.

Perhaps the only other English prog band to achieve the otherworldliness that Floyd achieved. The instrumental passages on this album are beautifully crafted and the vocals are almost whispered. An album where the cover and content go perfectly together.

Ashley Hutchins features on three albums in this list, and rightly so. After leaving Fairport he assembled this group of musicians who created a better album than the following Fairport effort. The two female singers really create some beautiful harmonies and the lack of fiddle make this stand out within the scene.

Here as part of the Albion Country Band. The playing ensemble that Ashley Hutchins put together is a who's who of the British folk rock movement at the time. It works very well, Collins singing is as good as she ever recorded and the choice of songs fitted perfectly together.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.9/100, a mean average of 88.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

Hahaha, I was listening to and loving Elder's new album, so I decided I should check out who else on the site liked them. And of course the only chart they show up on is yours. Makes sense. Hope you're good anyway. Also, the new Elder's fantastic, although I guess you already knew that.

When it expands, it will be interesting to see if there's as much of a prog rock flavour.

@Buckchilly, I would have chosen Blackwater Park, then Still Life, then Reveries, then Damnation.

@Defeat213, I've never been a Blackwater Park person, if it wasn't Ghost Reveries it would be Morningrise or Still Life. Can I ask what you'd chose?

@lethalnezzle touché! Sleep's Holy Mountain will probably make the top 100.

Although I can definitely agree with most of this chart, I'm just not feeling Ghost Reveries on there instead of a different Opeth album.
