Top 100 Music Albums of 2014
by paladisiac

For 2014, i'm tightening my minimum track-average rating from 61.67 to an even 64. The only allowable exceptions are: 1) those with a strong whole-album concept (where the whole is stronger than the sum of the parts), 2) albums JUST under 64-track avg that i believe i'll like more (and subsequently re-rate up) over time, and 3) for sentimental favorites.

I'm including brief synposes of albums here and will expand upon them per album once 2014 is over.

An extension of their prior release, it's a bit more abstract, but contains all of the guitar-and-drum fury of "attack on memory". There's less respite from the onslaught this time around as there's no "fall in" of fleeting gentleness. The entire album is mass of pummeling grunge with shredding guitars and the fastest drum-playing i've heard in years.

Awesome rock/punk that would make green day proud, with a heavy dose of transgender alternative rock narratives that give this album its own personal character. I love the brutal honesty of songs like "unconditional love" and "dead friend", and with titles like "transgender dysphoria blues" and "fuckmylife666", you know it's all in your f*ckin' face whether you like it or not.

This album sounds very influenced by fun.'s recent success. It's not a coincidence that Jack Antonoff was involved in 1989. Fun.'s sonic bombast and autotune litter this album. But like "some nights", it works (for the most part). You can also hear Max Martin's pristine pop presence, someone who helped Britney come up in the 90s. For a pure pop album, i'm in heavy likey. Some of her personal lyrics about dating specifics can be a bit cornball, but for the most part, she knows how to write and perform a good pop song! If the 2nd half was as strong as the 1st half, i might actually have a taylor swift #1-album-of-the-year here!

FINALLY, a return to form after Hurley and Raditudey and all that other hooey! Finally, a Weezer album that rocks, is nuanced AND has sincere hooks. If you're looking to recheck 'em out, I'd suggest listening to the "go away", "cleopatra" "foolish father" suite followed by the "futurescope trilogy" -- that will tell you all you need to know about where Weezer is now. Thank you Rivers Cuomo and Ric Ocasek. For Weezer, everything WAS (FINALLY) alright in the end!

Spoon's back into the hip, rock/pop groove of GAx5, just not as funky, but still a return-to-form. "They Want My Soul" is mostly uptempo and recaptures everything you loved of 00s spoon. Check out "do you" and spacey "new york kiss" for the best of what 2014 spoon has to offer.

Cohesive album despite the multiple producer influences. This is her most poppy album yet with hooks peppered throughout, although she doesn't knock any song into "classic" territory.

After co/writing huge hits for other kids, like icona pop's "i love it" and iggy azalea's "fancy" chorus, she comes back with a few hits of her own. Songs like "boom clap" and "break the rules" lead the pack of punk-tinged bubblegum pop tons of cute sass to spare. I still prefer "true romance", but this album's almost as good.

Ryan Adams has returned with an immaculately-produced, strategically-calculated rock album that hits all of the right notes and comes with all of the effectively-timed hooks. As a result, he has delivered his best album since Jacksonville City Nights. However, what the content editor giveth he also taketh away; meaning, sure, you don't have the same eye-rolling messes of song ideas, but you also don't reach the same tear-enducing or guitar-pumping awesome ballads and rockers of his past. Still, I WILL TAKE IT and hope Ryan can build on this as well as his newfound-love of the live performance and his contentment with life in general (as witnessed by covering bryan adams lately).

The New Pornographers have largely recaptured the magic of their first 2 albums, pumping multiple hooks into the majority of these abnormal pop/rock tracks. The poppiest tracks still mostly eminate from AC, the loveliest from Neko and the strangest from Bejar, but the tracks are tighter than they have been since Twin Cinema. If one article i read is true, this is in no small thanks to Kathryn Calder. Thank you, Kathryn. And thank you New Pornographers for once again bringing me an album more complex than simple pop but carrying all of the smiles. (And i still heavily heart Neko.)
