Simbi’s aptitude for the sweeping and majestic put on full display. The opening is arguably the most zeitgeist-tunned major track of the early 2020s, and, once the doors are knocked down, we’re in for an absolutely flawless succession of velvety bangers: the glistening “Woman”, the smirking “Two Worlds Apart”, the synth-pop sparkle of “Protect My Energy”, and the godly smooth groove of “Point and Kill”. The rare lengthy album where every song nails it, a true lightning-in-a-bottle project. I’m lucky to have heard this live in the post-pandemic years; the performance, like the LP, had such an effortless spark with the audience that it remains to this day one of the most joyful live gigs I’ve ever seen.

In "Journey to the West", Sun Wukong is a powerful god-like being brandishing his gold rod, but also a force of impish chaos crashing forth against the crystalline order of the Heavenly Palace. This EP captures that essence to a degree I didn't think possible — that grandiosity, that golden radiance, and that all-smirking mischievousness. The glittery chords in the opening track glide in like Sun Wukong on his cloud, the flicker of day-beams breaking the sky's shroud. "Ruyi Jingu Bag"'s guttural rumble displays the aura of one who, behind a jokey facade, could prove himself a formidable opponent in battle. But in their graceful sheen, every track here can be said to also capture some aspect of Heaven's careful balance and arrangement. More than a single figure, the EP embodies that fundamental conflict: the pale celestial gleam of order, and the tottering of this domain under assaulting forces of havoc.

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

An admirable chart - nice, fairly even spread across the decades; great diversity across nations (although a bit disappointed to see that Australia/New Zealand have been overlooked again). It was also nice to read that your family introduced you to Bob Dylan ~ and now you have 2 Dylan albums in your top 100.
