Granted, it's not a conventional pick for favourite Beatles album. Thematically it holds together far less well than many, and there are one or two tracks that can give you a nasty surprise (and not always for the right reasons). But apart from having personal reasons to love this album - it was the last birthday present my mum bought me before she died - those are the very reasons why I love it best: it's like a whitewashed haunted house or remote castle with secret passages nobody's ever been to before. And after all that adventure, a lullaby to send you to sleep. Don't have nightmares. . .

I wasn't sure exactly where to put this, but I couldn't leave it out. It's easy to get blase about The Beatles, and this is no longer the automatic choice for their best album; but go back to it after a break, and all its freshness and originality pours over you like a summer shower. The concept was very much Paul's baby, but John had some of the highlights, including the lion's share of the mesmerising closer, which only sounds like a cliche through over-exposure, not through lack of intrinsic merit.

Over the years this album's reputation has grown to eclipse that of its illustrious successor; and while I still have a slight preference for the latter, I can understand the preference of REVOLVER to modern ears. For a start, the group were only dipping a toe in the acid bath in which, by the following year, they were positively drowning, so perhaps it sounds slightly less "of its time" than 'Pepper'. Also, perhaps the concept of the "concept album" has fallen out of favour compared with a collection of fine stand-alone songs like this, which brim with invention and variety. Whatever the reason, I find something new every time I listen.

Already having established themselves as superior hitmakers who changed the face of popular music, this album announced in no uncertain terms that their ambitions were higher than that. Hints of a more adult sound had been evident on earlier albums, but this marks The Beatles' transition from lovable mop-tops to sophisticated artistes, or as one critic put it, "from rock n'roll to rock". Consider how different HELP! is from REVOLVER, only a year apart - and then consider how RUBBER SOUL appeared halfway through that period. Sure, there were one or two rather slight efforts, which more time might have replaced, and the running order was a little bumpy, but for an album that had no singles, for six tracks to appear on the 'Red' Best Of. . .is pretty good going.

Like COURT AND SPARK, this is an album with stiff competition for my affections from others by the same artist, and to be honest I think it was a little over-produced; but there's no doubting the quality of this, The Beatles' "real" swansong. Even Lennon, who by now had left the band in spirit if not in fact, managed to rise to the occasion at least three times, and Harrison must have stunned everyone with two of the best songs of not just his but the band's catalogue. McCartney, meanwhile, showed his best and his worst - the latter with the deplorable 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', the former with 'Oh! Darling' and the bulk of the Long Medley - a mini-symphony which worked a treat, no matter what a curmudgeonly Lennon might have said (I bet he liked it in private).

At the other end of their career, brimming with confidence and still unspoilt by it all, this was The Beatles' first album to feature all their own songs, and far and away the most accomplished of their "mop-top" phase. Whereas the above was dominated by McCartney's sophisticated grasp of musical form while Lennon was peacing it up with Yoko, this was dominated by Lennon's exuberant wit and energy while McCartney was having a little love-in of his own with Jane Asher. Of course, there were a few tender touches, but most of it is sheer joyous glad-to-be-alive pop that had something extra: some commentators have marked the opening chord of the title track to the opening of their golden period, with the closing chord on SGT. PEPPER as its death-knell. But I'm sure the music-buyers and movie-goers of 1964 just thought it was a bloody good time - and all these years later, so do I.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.8/100, a mean average of 91.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Great chart. At the same time you can find well known classics and gems which are generally not found, all with very personal comments. Very happy to see On the beach as the top Neil Young album (that earned you an extra 5 points :D). On the downside, it may lack >2000's albums, but I understand, The 60's and 70's were so special...

Easily 100/100. This is a glorious chart. I had a bit of time so I read all your notes and I wasn't bored once. Far from it! You write well and with passion, humour and sincerity. It was a pleasure to read this. 22 in common with mine, only 1 album I don't dig - Genesis' Lamb - but I am clearly in the minority it's a very popular album. Several albums/artists to check out. I am going to HMV to buy After Bathing At Baxters today - hopefully it's still in their sale. I love psychedelic music. You write so well I think you could have a career sideline there, if you don't already. Do people still keep blogs? Anyway what a pleasant way to spend half an hour. Looking forward to perusing your other charts now.

Refreshing to see a real personal chart rather than so many of the lists that have all the usual suspects and smack of the copy and paste culture!

Excellent descriptions. I can ignore all the flaws and the albums I don't like here (and there aren't many) when there are so many personal reflections on your favourite albums

Very good chart. I've got almost every album there. I looked up your chart because you're only one of two other people beside me who gave ratings for the Cabaret soundtrack. A bit disappointed not to see it in your top 100 but great to see, Nightclubbing, in there. Good stuff.
