A female companion to the above choice - four years before the fact. Of course, it's more directly confessional - if Dylan has too many masks, Joni doesn't have any - and her graceful, spare arrangements and tuneful ululations are a far cry from "sand and glue"; but that doesn't mean the emotional punch isn't pretty hard-hitting. The range of subject matter and the conviction of her delivery prove that she's no beginner, and certainly more than a pre-Raphaelite flower child.

The follow-up to BLUE, and in the intervening eighteen months Joni evidently had a lot of growing pains, to which this, her 'Songs of Experience' album attests. The first hints of a more sophisticated, jazz-inflected sound are to be heard here, as are some of her more world-weary, world-wary reflections on being a "woman of heart and mind" in the still male-dominated music business, trying to run with the boys without having her heart trampled on. Well, I think she pulled it off, don't you?

Here's Joni back again, and this time the wide-eyed little girl really has gone for good, replaced by a sophisticated woman who's nobody's fool. Her voice here starts that slow descent of her register wrought by experience - and cigarettes - and her milieu is more jazz club than folk festival. The lyrical focus has broadened too; rather than the early plaintive confessionals she takes more universal themes - stifling suburbia, waning youth, the perils of bad or weak men, even religion. Maturing nicely I'd say, like a fine wine.

Very much a night-time listen for me, as when I first heard it at 6am with a mate in my hall of residence bedroom all those years ago. You can imagine Joni driving through the night, away from, or towards, some ill-starred affair of the heart. Whereas its predecessor was musically various, this is more even-tempered and monotonous (not dull), giving you a chance to savour the lyrics of a woman who enters her fourth decade with more worldly wisdom than most people manage in their eighth, yet still battling with "hope and hopelessness". A pilgrimage, indeed.

Although a couple of her other albums have eclipsed this one in my affections, this still has an unmistakable touch of class. She's definitely getting less folky and more jazzy by this time, and her lyrics are becoming less directly confessional, more allusive and opaque. 'Help Me' was a tasteful Top Ten hit in the US, but it's just one of a number of tracks that explore the search for intimacy while trying to keep your head when all about are losing theirs, stopping to wonder why "again and again, the same situation". Still, at least she's got her sense of humour - the album closes on a cheerfully crazy high.

My brother urged this album on me in contrast to the more popular BLUE, and while I could never agree with him that this is superior, it certainly is an interesting and worthwhile listen. A double vinyl set, it was much more experimental than her previous work, yet still managed to make the UK album chart. The two outer sides are extended philosophical singer-songwriter workouts, often with a jazzy feel, while the two inner sides comprise mainly percussion-laden tracks with minimal or secondary vocals and lyrics, and a stunning twenty-minute song-symphony. "It's a long, long way from Canada", she singe; well, it's a long, long way from Greenwich Village too, it seems (metaphorically, that is - I'm not absolutely sure she went there). But this album is definitely more New Orleans than New York City, and her taste for jazz increased with the follow-up, MINGUS. But that's the thing about Joni - althogh no show-off, she was, in her quiet way, quite an innovator, as I'm sure a quick listen to this album will confirm.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 2% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 90.0/100, a mean average of 91.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Great chart. At the same time you can find well known classics and gems which are generally not found, all with very personal comments. Very happy to see On the beach as the top Neil Young album (that earned you an extra 5 points :D). On the downside, it may lack >2000's albums, but I understand, The 60's and 70's were so special...

Easily 100/100. This is a glorious chart. I had a bit of time so I read all your notes and I wasn't bored once. Far from it! You write well and with passion, humour and sincerity. It was a pleasure to read this. 22 in common with mine, only 1 album I don't dig - Genesis' Lamb - but I am clearly in the minority it's a very popular album. Several albums/artists to check out. I am going to HMV to buy After Bathing At Baxters today - hopefully it's still in their sale. I love psychedelic music. You write so well I think you could have a career sideline there, if you don't already. Do people still keep blogs? Anyway what a pleasant way to spend half an hour. Looking forward to perusing your other charts now.

Refreshing to see a real personal chart rather than so many of the lists that have all the usual suspects and smack of the copy and paste culture!

Excellent descriptions. I can ignore all the flaws and the albums I don't like here (and there aren't many) when there are so many personal reflections on your favourite albums

Very good chart. I've got almost every album there. I looked up your chart because you're only one of two other people beside me who gave ratings for the Cabaret soundtrack. A bit disappointed not to see it in your top 100 but great to see, Nightclubbing, in there. Good stuff.
