I know, why on earth have I picked this over PET SOUNDS, SUNFLOWER or SURF'S UP? Not to mention the belatedly released SMILE SESSIONS? Well, I don't know. . .I just like it! It's. . .funky pretty, that's it. Actually, it's a bloody good almost-concept album rising like a power-pop phoenix from the psychedelic ashes. Or something. . .And why wasn't 'Sail On, Sailor' a worldwide smash? If Blondie Chapman's lead vocal is good enough for the 'Boys' it should be good enough for anyone. A sort of eco-spiritual celebration before we knew we needed one. If only we'd listened, we might never have had sub-prime. . .or even Thatcher. (Yeah, I agree, that WOULD have been too good to be true.)

Well, you didn't think I was going to leave it out, did you? It was just a question of where exactly to put it. It's easy to take a classic like this for granted, especially when you consider what might have been. . .but never mind that; this stands on its own, and always will, as the point when The Beach Boys came together as a group, both transcending their surfer image and establishing a friendly rivalry with a certain beat combo from over the water - the Atlantic, that is, not the Mersey (though that too, if you like). I've heard that John was a bit more lukewarm about it than the rest; I suspect that was him being 'cool', as nobody with his instinctive sense of harmony and musical texture (if not as melodious as his chum) could fail to be impressed by the sheer breadth and wealth of the good on offer here, in their heart of hearts. Doesn't matter what time of year you play it, it's always summer with this album. (PS: Rumours of Lennon's tepid response have been exaggerated; I've just heard Brian Wilson on the radio say he personally called the 'Boys' to say he thought it was the greatest album of all time. Not that rock critics are ones for gossip. . .)

Quite rightly, the critical stature of this album has grown over the years since its first release, when it was the worst performing album in the US chart to date. Considering the tumult that followed the collapse of both SMILE and the band's leader, The Beach Boys made some pretty remarkable albums in these years, which unfortunately tended to get overlooked because they "weren't SMILE" and their credibility had plummeted in the acid-soaked close of the 60s. But anyone who can listen to this album without delight needs their ears syringed: as befits the title, it is a glorious afternoon in the sun, followed by a dip in the ocean, the harmonies are as richly indulgent as a knickerbocker glory, but fortunately they don't make you fat, just drunk with aural pleasure. The follow-up, SURF'S UP, is also heavenly, though a bit more lyrically political/ecological, whereas this tends to stay mainly romantic, though with the usual one-with-the-world vibe that became increasingly a part of their oeuvre.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.8/100, a mean average of 91.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 91.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.2.

Great chart. At the same time you can find well known classics and gems which are generally not found, all with very personal comments. Very happy to see On the beach as the top Neil Young album (that earned you an extra 5 points :D). On the downside, it may lack >2000's albums, but I understand, The 60's and 70's were so special...

Easily 100/100. This is a glorious chart. I had a bit of time so I read all your notes and I wasn't bored once. Far from it! You write well and with passion, humour and sincerity. It was a pleasure to read this. 22 in common with mine, only 1 album I don't dig - Genesis' Lamb - but I am clearly in the minority it's a very popular album. Several albums/artists to check out. I am going to HMV to buy After Bathing At Baxters today - hopefully it's still in their sale. I love psychedelic music. You write so well I think you could have a career sideline there, if you don't already. Do people still keep blogs? Anyway what a pleasant way to spend half an hour. Looking forward to perusing your other charts now.

Refreshing to see a real personal chart rather than so many of the lists that have all the usual suspects and smack of the copy and paste culture!

Excellent descriptions. I can ignore all the flaws and the albums I don't like here (and there aren't many) when there are so many personal reflections on your favourite albums

Very good chart. I've got almost every album there. I looked up your chart because you're only one of two other people beside me who gave ratings for the Cabaret soundtrack. A bit disappointed not to see it in your top 100 but great to see, Nightclubbing, in there. Good stuff.
