Turned out to be a great year for popular music... A word of explanation - this chart has much the same albums as BEA's overall year chart because, frankly, this is the only place I've been looking at new album releases - if an album makes some kind of impression on the overall 2016 chart I usually check it out, because people here do have a good ear for the most interesting music happening.

A bold and beautiful record, it's easy to forget how ambitious this is for chart-topping globe uniting 'pop' music - U2 haven't done anything quite this dark and brooding, Coldplay don't sound like they ever will, it's more like what Joy Division might have done after 'Closer' and is allied to Bowie in his Berlin phase. Sounds great as a headphone experience, and is perfect 'chill-out' material.

Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Who needs opera when you've got Bowie delivering this last act drama? This is great art and Bowie's best album for twenty years at least. But you probably know all this. "Lazarus", "Girl Loves Me" and "I Can't Give Everything Away" are the most haunting and compelling tunes for me. A final statement in keeping with the way Bowie lived his life that, as he's done often before, completely captivated the world's attention.

Sounds similar to Green Day's 'American Idiot' and early Weezer - not bad things. What struck me most hearing this the first few times was how American bands consistently, erm.. 'rock harder' than British bands, we here in the UK seem to be too self conscious or too ironic to just crank the guitars up and get our heads down for a joyful lifts-you-to-the-skies riff riot. Anyway, back to the album - "Fill in The Blank", "Killer Whales/Drunk Drivers" and, especially, the exhilarating epic "The Ballad Of The Costa Concordia" are sublime, and as good as anything anybody else has recorded this year - sensational! The rest of it is generally solid indi-nerdy college rock, consistently good, always interesting, but not as memorably tuneful. Evens out at a very respectable 9/10. The kids'll love it.
