Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

A very interesting chart with a lot of unexpected turns. Ever since I read Joe S. Harrington in 2001 and David Keenan in 2003 I have always appreciated a chart that is unexpected, and this one, as other writers have noted, delivers on that count.

Interesting chart - excellent coverage of the decades and across nationalities.
The emphasis on orchestral & jazz music is unusual for this site but a nice change.

That Mingus record is legendary, not my personal favorite in Jazz but it's so epic. I love that you have In A Silent Way up there. A lot of artists I don't recognize as well, goof stuff!
