1997-RCA
VARIOUS PRODUCERS
1. Torn
2. One More Addiction
3. Big Mistake
4. Leave Me Alone
5. Wishing I Was There
6. Smoke
7. Pigeons And Crumbs
8. Don't You Think?
9. Impressed
10. Intuition
11. City
12. Left Of The Middle
Natalie Imbruglia was a soap opera star in Australia when she decided to give it up for music. Her debut album, Left Of The Middle, was a huge smash, thanks to the massive single "Torn" and four other single releases. The rest is an artist trying to find herself, with mixed results. A lot of it sounds like background Adult Contemporary music, with a few bright spots. A lot was expected from her...a lot never came. This was as good as she got, which is too bad...there was some potential there.
Her second album did not have a hit like "Torn", and her music career has hit the skids, although she is still trying. This is an okay record, not a lot to recommend it. At least she tries to rock, and doesn't go down the completely bland path. This one falls pretty much square in the middle. [First added to this chart: 09/16/2012]

1997-MERCURY
Produced By BRUCE FAIRBAIRN & ANDREW FARRISS
1. Show Me (Cherry Baby)
2. Elegantly Wasted
3. Everything
4. Don't Lose Your Head
5. Searching
6. I'm Just A Man
7. Girl On Fire
8. We Are Thrown Together
9. Shake The Tree
10. She Is Rising
11. Building Bridges
Elegantly Wasted is the tenth album for INXS, and the last featuring singer Michael Hutchense. It's a comeback of sorts...the band had taken four years off and found that it still had its chops...it was just the audience that had forgotten about them. This is almost as good as any of their previous albums, and on some songs (the title track, especially) they show that they had plenty of fire left in them. But, a lot of time had passed, music had changed, and despite the album being pretty good, it sold almost nothing.
7 months after the release of Elegantly Wasted, Hutchense was dead, and INXS was no more for a number of years. They soiled their name on the hit TV show Rock Star: INXS, and stumbled around until 2012 wondering why nobody had told them to give up yet. But in the 80's and 90's, this was a solid band. This album is the end of that time. [First added to this chart: 04/13/2012]

1997 – MUTE / REPRISE
Produced By FLOOD & NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS
1. Into My Arms
2. Lime Tree Arbour
3. People Ain’t No Good
4. Brompton Oratory
5. There Is A Kingdom
6. (Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?
7. Where Do Now But Nowhere?
8. West Country Girl
9. Black Hair
10. Idiot Prayer
11. Far From Me
12. Green Eyes
If it’s something that rocks that you’re looking for, you may want to move along. This post-punk band took a sharp left turn for The Boatman’s Call, their tenth album. Not a rock record at all, the album is filled with slow tempos, piano based songs, sparse arrangements, and themes that range from melancholy to sadness to love and despair. It can be a downer if you’re not ready for it, but one thing is for sure…this is easily their most beautiful album, and one of the best surprises in music from the later half of the nineties. Even with the gentle feel of the music, the band is ever present…in a perfectly understated way. This is their best work, and it’s Nick Cave’s masterpiece. A word that, in this case, is very well deserved. This is great stuff.
“Into My Arms” and ”(Are You) The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?” are the singles, and they are fantastic. But there is so much more here. “People Just Ain’t No Good” is just what the title suggests. Several songs are about personal relationships, examining them closely and with care instead of pounding them out like rockers tend to do. This is Nick Cave at his most personal, which is absolutely a good thing. I know that some may be put off by the slow tempo of the music and the sparse arrangements, but that’s a huge part of what makes this album so special. For me, an absolutely must have. For you? Check it out and see if it’s for you. If you can dig it, the rewards are multiple. (My copy says it’s the 2011 remaster, but it doesn’t have the five bonus tracks it’s supposed to have.)
