Although I reviewed this album back in 2017 (when life was 'normal') by way of tribute to Neil Peart, I wanted to recognise his amazing skill as a lyricist. Because he was such an amazing drummer this other skill, pivotal to the overall listening experience, is often overlooked. To sit down with this vinyl gatefold and follow the lyrics as the vinyl spins is a truly enlightening and uplifting experience. Neil Peart was responsible for the greater percentage of lyrics on this album and many others. A true musical genius, never to be forgotten. [First added to this chart: 04/17/2021]

America weren't known for the birth of progressive rock bands. This mid-seventies masterpiece will sit happily in any prog chart. Love the vocal harmonies and general musicianship. The album is bound within an amazing very prog sleeve which if you didn't know better would hint towards a British band. [First added to this chart: 10/02/2022]

Get this on vinyl! Hillage's guitar work makes up for the not quite top form vocals. There are better albums. Fish Rising. Motivation Radio. Aura. Live Hearald. Green. Open. [First added to this chart: 04/01/2022]

A blisteringly good album! From the heavily reverbed drum intro of 'Dance to your Daddy' to the Eastern leanings of 'Sirocco', I actually prefer this album to Next and I love Next! From the very upbeat Dance to your Daddy to the very American driving rock sound of Amos Moses and then to the funky Jungle Rub Out, the driving drums, lead guitar solos and gritty vocals win through. Many musical styles are embraced here. Love it all! [First added to this chart: 03/21/2021]

This is a really excellent and somewhat underrated album and I agree with a previous comment, the album is so much more than Don't Fear the Reaper. There is something rather intriguing and dark about the manikinesque looking character holding the cards on the front cover sleeve. [First added to this chart: 02/24/2024]

A very underrated album, in my opinion much better than 'Vol 4' as is ''Never Say Die'. Still a very heavy album when it needs to be, like for example, the riff and keyboard string intro of 'You Won't Change Me'. Packs quite a punch with some cracking guitar soloing throughout and the drums virtually jump out of the speakers! The sleeve design lets it down a bit but that is a minor point really as the music is great. [First added to this chart: 03/21/2021]

I could approach this in two ways, compare this album with the likes of 2, 4, Physical Graffiti, Houses of the Holy, or, rate it as an isolated album, almost as if I had never heard this band before. I will opt for the latter.

The album opens with a stunning driving blues rock workout and is followed up by a slower but still punchy blues rock offering, both tracks are very guitar driven with no noted keyboards present so far. 'Royal Orleans' is again very bluesy with some great guitar soloing. 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' continues with the harder driving blues theme introducing harmonica which really works. 'Candy Store Rock' is less memorable than what has come before but still ok. Some great guitar work on the fun 'Hots On For Nowhere'. 'Tea For One' is a slower laid back blues workout with some great Jimmy Page fretwork caressing. If you are a guitarist you will appreciate how good this last track actually is.

In summary, I really like the album. There are no keyboards that I can discern but that doesn't matter as the overall sound and production is superb, particularly the way the drums are recorded and how they sit in the mix.

The Hipgnosis sleeve design is thought provoking. So what is the object, just an abstract table ornament? Should the clever listener be linking the abstract object with what is quite an abstract album or am I over thinking it?

Superb double album, I have the vinyl re-issue which has a 7'' single included. It is always a tough choice between the top three, if I had Innervisions on in the background I would say that should be in pole position and equally Talking Book is very worthy. If you are thinking of buying a Stevie Wonder album best get all three of his classic trilogy! [First added to this chart: 09/24/2020]

The Pierre Moerlen led Gong is a very different affair to Flying Teapot/Angels Egg/You era Gong. Almost like a different band, more akin to Shamal era Gong. Fully instrumental, this album has a true jazz feel to it. I like it but in a different way to Angels Egg etc. RIP Pierre, you were a great drummer. [First added to this chart: 08/12/2020]

Fantastic cover art on a par with Tangerine Dream Rubycon and Phaedra. Musically it is closer to those albums, providing collages to provoke images of places way beyond this earth. [First added to this chart: 02/12/2022]
