To me this is the epitome of what an album should be: enough material to get plenty of bang for your buck, but not too long where its a labor to get through. Enough diversity in genre, style, length, arrangement etc to keep each track interesting and have nothing sound the same but to still keep it cohesive and flow. to add onto the last point also where the song order enhances the listening experience but you can still play the sounds individually or on shuffle where it still works. The stones led in large part by the creative force of Keith Richards created the ultimate American album which is impressive considering they're a British band. It's not just a "classic" rock record it touches on most of America's genres of blues, country, gospel, soul, pop, and rock and blends it all together to be a defining force of 20th century American music. Highlights: Rocks Off, Sweet Virginia, Let it Loose, Happy, Shake Your Hips, All Down The Line, Loving Cup, and Tumbling Dice.

This album to me is very similar to exile it hits on all the same points stated above, however they do it through a D.I.Y punk attitude. Where the stones set out to make the best rock, blues, country songs of all time, the clash set out to take their influences but instead of one-upping them they made them there own. They knew they couldn't beat their idols, but they knew they could take something and truly add their individual unique flavor to the mix. They almost topped this record with Sandinista but their ambition got the better of them with that and while I love it I can recognize that trying to one up this album, they overindulged and created something too superfluous. Some highlights: Clampdown, I'm not Down, Train in Vain, Lost in the Supermarket, The Card Cheat, and obviously Title Track.

Considered by most a punk or post-punk album which certainly is a valid description of their work, I see it more of a rock or even progressive rock album due to the mastery of the guitar which is displayed on the album. The weaving between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd is just as good as any other guitar hero. In a lot of ways this album is similar to the album Layla where Eric Clapton and Duane Allman show off their own version of the musical bond they share. The difference is this album contains on the whole more cohesive and put together songs of greater songmenship that even when they jam for extended solos it still retains the tightness of rock or pop song without the messiness of Jam bands. Tom Verlaine shows off that he's as much of a streetwise poet as Richard Hell or Patti Smith, but one that can play guitar well and do so with his partner in crime Richard Loyd.

Theres nothing that sounds like this record. This is the moment where high art and pop art was truly mixed into one. Where art made for the masses could also be appreciated and beloved by the highly cultured. They set the stone for all popular music afterwords. this was their most cohesive and impressive work. If the album had originally contained strawberry fields and penny lane that was the plan at one time then maybe this record would undeniably be in the number 1 spot. Highlights: With a Little Help From My Friends, Lovely Rita, A Day In The Life, She's Leaving Home, and Getting Better.

This record is just as good as any Beatles record. What I love about this record is how fresh it still sounds. The wall of sound and atmospheric dreamy quality that matches with Georges superb songwriting and even better guitar playing makes it really special. One of the major complaints of the album is the last part or the ‘Apple Jams’ but originally George thought of those as separate, more of an extra. The album certainly had a large impact on not only rock but also alternative subgenera like dream pop especially bands like Galaxie 500 which have a very good cover of “Isn’t it a pity”. Some Highlights: Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp, Wah-Wah, Awaiting on you all, Hear me Lord, Apple Scruffs, What is Life, Out of the Blue

Obviously a similar record to Sgt Pepper in terms of its impact and innovative recording techniques and instrumentation. The Beach Boys have a weird dichotomy to them on one hand people reduce them to a novelty barbershop quartet surf band while at the same time are thought of for their sophisticated pop. Sometimes People narrow in so much on this they don't realize that there was strong hints of this in their previous albums Beach Boys today or Summer days. Also another great one is Wild Honey which has a really cool lo-fi aesthetic in a lot of ways that album reminds me of Guided by Voices. Some Highlights: Wouldn't it be nice, Sloop John B, I'm waiting for the day, and Here Today

There wasn't much like this when this came out, but afterwards everyone in Britain wanted to sound like them. They get lumped in with Madchester however it really isn't a dance record except for fools gold which wasn't even on the original release. Everything really plays perfectly off each other from John Squire an amazing guitarist who in a lot of ways is like Hendrix really blurring the lines between rhythm and lead while playing, Ian Browns slacker, drones but beautifully airy voice, Reni's fantastic drumming similar to Ringo by being able to fit the playing style perfectly to the type of song and having off kilter drum fills, and lastly Mani has an awesome bass tone and comes up with some lines that truly make the song like "shoot you down" or "She bangs the drums" or by keeping the rhythm and band tight like "I am the Resurrection". Besides songs mentioned another couple highlights are Waterfall and Bye Bye Badman.

It doesn't matter what Paul Westerberg words are, he sings, and often times yells with such raw emotional honesty you can't help but believe every word that comes out of his mouth. Tim is also a truly remarkable album and it could have very easily been in the place of this one. While the Replacements are highly-rated they are very under appreciated.
