Trap is a strange genre. It is a slow, dramatic version of hip hop on a first glimpse. Looking closely you notice the unit measure in trap is elongated to 8 beats, instead of the 4 beats in hip hop. The fifth beat is de-emphasized in order to achieve this. But what's more: There is a second pattern over this one that's about as dominant as the first. One that emphasizes the first, fourth (which further helps to de-emphasize the fifth beat) and sixth beat. Soulja Boy (yes, really) was the first to bring that second part to the foreground so much that it became the dominant pattern, and the stretched out hip hop beat became obscured, something which became a standard in trap from the '10s. This changed everything, and I'm almost hesitant to call the old and new trap the same genre.
