The Cure

This will sound really nerdy, but the first thing I did when I got my first copy of the Sound Forge digital audio editor back in the 90s was to cut 'n' paste repeating sections of "All Cats Are Grey" so as to increase the run-time from 5:28 to over 9 minutes, thereby making it almost twice as depressing as the original version. Heaven Or Las Vegas

Cocteau Twins

If you're only just now getting into the Cocteau Twins, this is probably the album to start with. Also, be sure to pronounce it "cuh-TOW" rather than "COCK-tow," so that people like me who have been into them from the beginning won't suspect that you're just some sort of callow dilettante. Spilt Milk

Jellyfish

Of all the albums that I bought because they were recommended to me by an anonymous person on the internet, this is my second-favorite. It's a bummer that Jellyfish only made two albums, but you just have to take what you can get, I guess. Still, I've always wondered if they might have stayed together longer if they'd called themselves "Swordfish" or "Tunafish" instead. [First added to this chart: 05/25/2022]

Babes Never Die

Honeyblood

Honeyblood are (or were, at least) a duo consisting of two young women from Scotland, who proved on this album that you don't necessarily need a bass player to make great records. I wish I'd known that when I was in a band. [First added to this chart: 06/26/2022]

New York Dolls

Back in the 70s, the closing track on Side A of this album, "Frankenstein," is what finally convinced me to sit down and read Mary Shelley's classic horror novel of the same name. That, in turn, ultimately led me to become an avid reader of 19th-Century horror and mystery fiction. But I still prefer the Dolls' version. [First added to this chart: 05/25/2022]

Juju

Siouxsie And The Banshees

Easily the best Banshees album, and for me at least, also the best John McGeoch album, the best proto-Goth album, and my favorite album made by anyone directly associated with the original ca. 1977 wave of British punk. And yet, despite this heaping-upon of accolades, I still can't help but think the choice of title was directly influenced by Alice Cooper's song "Black Juju" from their Love it to Death album. Compilation

The Dukes Of Stratosphear

As anyone likely to have read this far down are aware, the Dukes are actually XTC recording as a psychedelic-60s pastiche band, so this is technically an XTC album, compiled from their "25 O'Clock" Dukes mini-LP and the full-length "Psonic Psunspot." Back in the mid-80s, it was still possible to keep your recording and release plans secret right up until the day a record appeared in the shops, so I didn't know about "25 O'Clock" at all until I physically encountered it in my favorite record shop. Maybe that's why I'm ranking this so highly — I love surprises! I also love chocolate-chip ice cream, so naturally I bought this compilation too. [First added to this chart: 06/28/2022]

Station To Station

David Bowie

Bowie said he was abusing a lot of cocaine when he recorded this album, and was subsisting on a diet consisting mostly of milk and bell peppers. He was badly messed up, both mentally and physically. Fans and critics alike took this to mean he'd developed a whole new persona, the "thin white duke," since he was so pale and weighted only about 80 pounds at the time, when in fact he was just strung-out and close to dying of malnutrition. I only mention this in case something similar happens to me, in which case I would prefer that my friends and family take me to the nearest hospital or rehab center instead of celebrating my fascinating "chameleon-like" persona-switching ability. XTC

After this album, XTC went "on strike" for about 5 years, due to their horrifically bad Virgin Records recording contract as well as Virgin's mishandling of this album, in all phases. This 5-year period coincided with the rise of the now-ubiquitous World Wide Web, so to this day, whenever I see a website (like this one you're visiting now), I get these terrible feelings of of strife, desolation and despair. Of course, sure, I probably would anyway, that's what the web is all about after all. But that 5-year strike just kind of makes it that much worse. [First added to this chart: 06/28/2022]

Fun chart with some downright hilarious write-ups. I listened to an XTC album (Skylarking) yesterday at your suggestion. Unfortunately not a vibe for me.
