Top 20 Greatest Music Albums
by s_swimley Unknown

Since my tastes are really varied, I tried not to duplicate too many artists. Though my formative years were during the "Grunge" heyday, I certainly have an appreciation of all eras. With an LP and CD collection over 800, spanning everything from Mozart to Motorhead, it's hard to pick out 20 unique albums. What I tried to to is take what I believe to be either the defining album of an artist's career or a groundbreaking album that paved the way for other artisits and a new movement. However, these are the albums I find myself putting on no matter what the situation calls for or what mood I'm in....perennial favorites if you will.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 72.5/100, a mean average of 62.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 62.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.5.

I think maxxy was pretty accurate with the rough draft comment. I went back through my collection to find some more "worthy" entries and this is what I've come up with. Yes, a lot is mainstream, but I believe a component of a great album is it's popularity and ability to reach people.
