Dylan covers 1: top 100 Dylan cover songs by Moondance

This chart reveals/uncovers the incredibly rich and diverse realm of Bob Dylan cover songs. One estimate puts the number of Dylan cover songs to be over 105,000; however my own research suggests that the number of verified, publicly available number of Dylan cover songs is closer to 10,000! In any event, to make a chart of my top 100 Dylan cover songs is both hard & easy.
To fully acknowledge and represent this diversity and to cover Dylan's entire 60 year recording career, I set certain parameters:
* Limit any artist to only one cover song;
* Limit any Dylan tribute album to only one cover song ~ Note: the number/diversity of Dylan tribute albums discovered during the making of this chart has amazed me. Despite having listened to over 50 tribute album, including the 30 tribute albums listed in this chart, I have only scratched the surface {elsewhere on the BEA site I am aware of a user who has a 'top 100 chart of 100% Dylan cover albums'; and during my research, I stumbled across a website that listed over 400 albums comprising between 50% - 100% Dylan cover songs};
* For Dylan albums with only a small number of original songs (eg 'Bob Dylan'; 'Greatest Hits Vol II'; 'Self Portrait'; 'Masterpieces'; 'Knocked Out Loaded' etc), this chart includes at least one cover song to showcase those albums;
* For each of the 27 Dylan albums that contain all or mostly original songs, this chart includes between two - four cover songs with the exception of 'Under The Red Sky' ~ for which finding quality cover songs proved a challenge and thus only one cover song is included in this chart;
* In other words, every Dylan album that includes, in part or in full, original songs is referenced in this chart (at last count, that added up to 40 Dylan albums);
* Some songs written/co-written by Dylan but never recorded by Dylan have been included in this chart (eg Clapton, Goffin, O'Keefe);
* Dylan side projects (eg Traveling Wilbury's, movie soundtracks) have also been included in this chart, to give this chart the most comprehensive feel that I could put together.
The order of the chart listing will be chronological - based on the release date of the corresponding contemporaneous studio album or the recording date for those songs that were released much later on compilation albums (Greatest Hits VolII, Masterpieces), the 1975 Basement Tapes or the various Bootleg Series albums.
The only exception to the chronological order is the #1 entry by Linda Mason, which is recognised as the first album to be released that was 100% dedicated to covering the songs of Bob Dylan.
The data in this chart - eg number of times Dylan has performed a particular song in concert is as at June 2023.

Rainy Day Women #12 & 35: The first cover version of "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" was recorded soon after the original by Dylan's 'Blonde on Blonde' album producer Bob Johnston and several musicians from the recording session. The band leader, Colonel Jubilation B. Johnson, refers to producer Bob Johnson ~ who also played the sousaphone. Other notable members of the 'group' were: Kenny Buttrey (drums, tambourine); Charlie McCoy (guitar, harmonica); Mac Gaydon (guitar); Brenton Banks (violin). On an album that also featured current 'hits' at the time such as 'Monday Monday'; 'Bang Bang'; 'Hang On Sloopy', the cover of Dylan's 'Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 appears at side 2, track 1.
Dylan recorded 'Rainy Day Women #12 & 35' (featuring a raucous brass band backing track) on 10 March 1966 and it was released as the opening track of his June 1966 'Blonde On Blonde' double album ~ Dylan's 7th studio album and the first double album in modern rock music history (edging out Zappa's 'Freak Out!' by 7 days). The album peaked at #3 in the UK & #9 in the US as well as being inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1999.
A single of 'Rainy Day Women #12 & 35' was released in April 1966, reaching #2 in the US (interestingly, held out of the #1 spot by The Mamas & The Papas "Monday Monday"), #7 in the UK, #17 in Australia & #13 in New Zealand.
Dylan first performed 'Rainy Day Women #12 & 35' to close his Isle of Wight concert on 31 August 1969. It has remained a set list favourite over the years with Dylan performing it over 860 times ~ making it the 14th most performed song in Dylan's concert history. The last performance of the song was on 14 October 2016 at Empire Polo Club, Indio, CA.

Visions Of Johanna: Robyn Hitchcock is an English folk music singer/songwriter, with 22 studio albums released between 1981 - 2022 (and 3 earlier albums with his band, The Soft Boys).
Robyn (who unashamedly admits to be heavily influenced by Dylan) dedicates the double CD 'Robyn Sings' to Dylan's songs. The first CD, covers 8 Dylan songs spanning the mid 60's to 1997. CD1 opens & closes with versions of 'Visions of Johanna'; with Robyn declaring: 'this is my favourite song; this is the reason I started writing songs'. Robyn has performed 'Visions Of Johanna' more then 65 times in concert ~ such is his love for the song.
As a side note, CD2 has Robyn recreating the entire 'electric' part of Dylan's infamous 17 May 1966 'Free Trade Hall, Manchester' concert (which is often mistaken for the Royal Albert Hall concert some 9 days later).
As a second side note: Robyn's partner is Emma Swift, and she is featured at entry #99 in this chart for her cover of the song 'I Contain Multitudes'.
Dylan did an early recording of 'Visions of Johanna' in January 1966 (released on The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3), but the better known version was recorded on 14 February 1966 and released on his May 1966 'Blonde On Blonde' double album.
Dylan first performed 'Visions of Johanna' at Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD on 17 October 1965 and it remained on set lists during his world tour of 1966. After returning to touring in 1974, the song has only made sporadic appearances in concert ~ around 225 in total ~ with it's final performance being at The Enmore Theatre, Sydney, Australia on 19 August 2018.

Just Like A Woman: Richie Havens is a US singer & guitarist with over 20 studio albums to his credit ~ released between 1966 to 2008. Richie died on 22 April 2013, aged 72.
At the penultimate track of his debut album, 'Mixed Bag' (sandwiched between San Francisco Bay Blues and Eleanor Rigby), Richie does the most exquisite rendition of Dylan's classic "Just Like A Woman". The song gets its unique intensity from Richie's 'open E' tuning technique and his superb vocal quality. Some 26 years later, Richie did an equally stunning version of this song at Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert ~ CD1, track 13.
Note: Richie is perhaps most remembered for his role at the original 1969 Woodstock where he played an extended opening set to allow artists to reach the venue due to traffic deadlock on the highway in ~ his performance of 'Freedom' is on the soundtrack album (side 1, track 3) and is also used over the closing credits for Ang Lee's 2009 'Taking Woodstock' movie.
Dylan recorded 'Just Like A Woman' on 8 March 1966 and it was released (side 2, track 4) on his June 1966 'Blonde On Blonde' album. The song is also included on most of Dylan's compilation/greatest hits albums.
Dylan first performed 'Just Like A Woman' in concert on 5 March 1966 at Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum, Jacksonville, FL and it has remained on the set list more often than not ever since - having been performed over 880 times. It was also one of the 5 songs performed by Dylan at his appearance at Concert For Bangla Desh (1 August 1971). The final performance on the song was on 26 November 2010 at Borgata Events Center, Atlantic City, NJ.

4th Time Around: Old Crow Medicine Band is a US string band based in Nashville and has released 9 studio albums between 1998 to 2022.
On this dedication album to Dylan, the Old Crow Medicine Show re-create the entire Blonde On Blonde double album ~ track by track ~, recorded 'live' at CMA Theatre, Nashville some 50 years after the release of the Dylan's original album (also recorded in Nashville ~ refer below). This dedication album reached #1 on the US Grass charts.
Their version of Dylan's '4th Time Around' (track 12) is very sensitively delivered and the harmonica equals, if not betters, that on the original album. The band have performed '4th Time Around' in concert on over 30 occasions.
Dylan recorded '4th Time Around' in mid February 1966 at the Columbia Music Row Studios in Nashville and the song was released (side 3, track 4) on his May 1966 'Blonde on Blonde' album.
Dylan first performed '4th Time Around' at Island Garden, Hempstead, NY on 26 February 1966 and it remained on the set list (usually the 2nd song of the acoustic section) during his subsequent US/world tour (February - May 1966). The song was rarely performed thereafter, with less than 50 'concert outings' up to it's final performance on 10 May 2002 at NEC Arena, Birmingham, England.

This Wheel's On Fire: Flake (an Australian pop rock group of the late 60's-early 70's) do a credible version of "This Wheel's On Fire" (side 1, track 5 of the album) ~ the single reached #20 on the Australian charts and stayed in the top 60 chart for an amazing 22 weeks. The Hollies cover of "This Wheel's On Fire" was one of several fine versions and included on their 1969 Dylan dedication album ~ 'Hollies Sing Dylan'.
Dylan recorded 'This Wheel's On Fire' (co-written with Rick Danko) in The Band's Big Pink basement, in Woodstock NY, between April - October 1967, but not officially released (side 4, track 6) until his June 1975 'The Basement Tapes' as well as the March 1978 'Masterpieces' albums. The Band's version of the song appeared on their July 1968 album , "Music From Big Pink".
Dylan has performed 'This Wheel's On Fire' over 125 times; for the first time (with The Band) on 14 January 1974 at Boston Garden, Boston, MA; and for the final time on 22 July 2012 at La Prairie de Kerampuilh, Carhaix-Plouguer, France.

You Ain't A-Goin' Nowhere: The penultimate track on 'Underwater Sunshine', the Counting Crows do a typically rollicking fun version of this well known Dylan classic - notably, the version/lyrics laid down at Big Pink, Woodstock (1967). There have been so many covers of this Woodstock version, including the first commercial release in April 1968 by The Byrds, where the song charted at #74 in the US and at #45 in the UK. Special mention for the Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova cover on the 'I'm Not Here' soundtrack album ~ this cover is of the latter (1971) Dylan version.
Dylan recorded 'You Ain't A-Goin' Nowhere' with The Band in Woodstock between April-October 1967, during his self imposed exile. The song was released (side 4, track 1) some nine years later on his June 1975 'The Basement Tapes'. A second recording (with significantly altered lyrics) was done by Dylan, backed by Happy Traum on banjo, bass, guitar and back-up vocals, at Columbia Studios, NY in October 1971; and was released (side 4, track 6) on his November 1971 'Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol 2' album. Interestingly, this latter version includes the lines: "Pack up your money, pull up your tent, McGuinn" ~ a reference to Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, who in the 1968 cover version mentioned above had mistaken the lyrics.
Surprisingly, it wasn't until 10 April, 1997 (University of Southern Maine, Portland) ~ some 30 years after being written ~ that Dylan first performed the song in concert. Since then, Dylan has performed the song just over 100 times; the final time being on 21 November 2012 at Barclay Center, Brooklyn, NY.
"Oh, oh, are we gonna fly/Down in the easy chair!"

All Along The Watchtower: No 'Dylan covers chart' could possibly be complete without Jimi's version of 'All Along The Watchtower'. Jimi's version is simply stunning and shows how a simple 12 lines folk/blues song can be re-interpreted and re-experienced all over again. Jimi's version was recorded in January 1968 (i.e. within two months of the official Dylan release) but it was not until September/October 1968 that the single & relevant album (side 4, track 3) reverberated across radio waves & stereo speakers. The single reached #20 in the US & #5 in the UK; has been ranked as high as the #40 greatest song ever by Rolling Stone Magazine; and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. Dylan is reported as saying that Jimi's version 'overwhelmed' him.
Dylan recorded 'All Along The Watchtower' on 6 November 1967 and it was released (side 1, track 4) on his December 1967 "John Wesley Harding" album ~ his 8th studio album, released after his self-imposed exile at Woodstock, NY, and marked a return to a semi-acoustic/folk-orientated style. The album reached #1 in the UK and #2 in the US.
Dylan first performed 'All Along The Watchtower' at the first show of his extensive 1974 USA tour (Chicago Stadium, 3 January 1974), where he was supported by The Band. The song has remained a set list favourite ever since and is Dylan's MOST played song in concert ~ a staggering 2270 times ~ with the last performance being on 29 November 2018 at Beacon Theatre, NY.
The 'live' version is closer to the version created by Jimi Hendrix than the original acoustic version, and Dylan has been quoted as saying that the 'live' version "is a tribute to Jimi".

The Ballad of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest: Thea Gilmore (more recently known as 'Afterlight') is an English singer/songwriter with 20 studio albums to her credit ~ released between 1998 - 2021. In January 2011, Gilmore appeared at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in a tribute concert celebrating the 70th Birthday of Bob Dylan. She performed versions of "I Pity the Poor Immigrant" and "Masters of War." Subsequently, Gilmore entered the studio with producer and husband Stonier and recorded the entire set of tracks found on Dylan's original release of John Wesley Harding. The album, Thea's 12th – unsurprisingly also titled John Wesley Harding - was released on 23 May 2011 and at track 5, she does a superb rendition of 'The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest'.
Dylan recorded 'The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest' on 17 October 1967 and it was released (side 1, track 5) on his December 1967 'John Wesley Harding' album.
Dylan has rarely performed the song 'live' (only 20 times), and it made it's first appearance during the 1987 US tour with the Grateful Dead at JFK Stadium, Philadelphia 10 July 1987. The last performance was on 17 November 2000 at Dillon Gymnasium, Philadelphia, PA.

I'll Be Your Baby Tonight: Robert Palmer was an English singer/songwriter with 14 studio albums released between 1974 and 2003. Robert died in 2003 aged 54. A track 9 of his 10th studio album, 'Please Explain' (which peaked at #9 on the UK charts), Palmer (with UB40) do a commercially successful 'reggae-style' version of Dylan's 'I'll Be Your Baby Tonight'. The song was released as a single, peaking at #1 in New Zealand; #4 in Australia; #6 in the UK; and #24 in the US.
Dylan recorded "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" on 29 November 1967 and it was released (side 2, track 6) less than one month later on his December 1967 'John Wesley Harding' album.
Dylan performed the song for the first time at his Isle of Wight concert (31 August 1969) and then it returned to the set list for the Rolling Thunder Review concerts from April 1976.
Overall, the song has been performed 560 times in concerts; and has been included in the set list for the current world wide Rough & Rowdy Ways tour, commencing in 2021 ~ and up to 20 April 2023 (final Nagoya Japan concert) it has performed over 90 times on the current tour.

I Threw It All Away: Yo La Tengo are an American indie band with 15 studio albums released between 1986 - 2020. On their 3rd album 'President Yo La Tengo' the band record 6 original songs before slipping in a 7th track (the last on the album) ~ which is a delicate cover of Dylan's 'I Threw It All Away'.
Dylan recorded 'I Threw It All Away' in mid February 1968 and it was released (side 1, track 4) on his April 1969 "Nashville Skyline' album - his 9th studio album, unsurprisingly, recorded in Nashville. The album reached #3 in the US and #1 in the UK. The song was released as a single and achieved moderate success ~ #30 in the UK & #85 in the US.
Dylan performed the song for the first time at his Isle of Wight concert on 31 August 1969 but it made fewer than 50 subsequent appearances in set lists ! with its final performance on 2 May 2002 at Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Dylan did play the song at the WIN Stadium, Wollongong, Australia on 5 September 1998 & I can claim that 'I WAS THERE' on the night.
