I remember this guy. Making a pretty mid album of gothic country in 2021, with some standout songs from there. Is it gonna be the same this time around?
Yeah, but greater. YUTWIO is more clear and consistent than Born Against. There are either songs in style of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, two sung heroes who usually, when taking inspiration from them, makes people write their best works. I agree with RYM user strangemeeting, saying the Cohen-inspired songs (The Mechanic being a few tiers below Suzanne, Agnes' simplicity , Virtue And Vitriol (prolly his clearest display of a melodiousness) , Garden of Leaving) than Waits (another mid song in It's All Gone , Texaco , Cannibal Within), as although I like when Amigo portrays emotion like that, there is only one Tom Waits who really can make me feel with that voice and tone. The best Waits-inspired song is the slow indie rock tune Stray Dog, because Amigo focuses on the statement than voice-imitation. He is best when he combines both on the same track, like the storytelling of the somewhat thrilling I'm Going To Heaven.
And yeah lyrically, this is a step up from Born Against. His delving into death just by the first few cuts, raises more of a pulse than before. He did have the serious topic on the predecessor, but he feels more experienced in what to speak to the listener thru YUTWIO.
And shoutout to two of the other best songs here Barrel And Staghorn, out of many instrumental cuts I have heard the last years with news samples over them, this stands among the best and surprisingly most understated. And then One Day At A Time, where the gothic elements of his country are absent and humor and rawness has taken its silver chair ("One day at a tiiiime (FUCK)" etc).
