A phenomenal achievement of songwriting, arrangement, and production. Many shades of instrumental color and musical journeys, with delightful hooks as well. Six guys (the band plus Shankar and Kingbird) who aren't necessarily great musicians produce a formidable work of art. I love listening to the earlier versions because they show how much refinement was needed to bring the final product to its glimmering form. Part of the greatness is that it's a concept album of solitude and alienation - including being with others without really being with them. Certainly one of the most underrated albums of the '80s. Absolutely includes Murder by Numbers, which is one of the two or three best tracks on the album. [First added to this chart: 11/27/2024]

The last 5-star album for this year. A very shallow year, but not compared to 1996-present. [First added to this chart: 11/27/2024]

Kind of like Porcupine in that it uses beautiful musical colors to present glum emotions. Enormously influential. [First added to this chart: 11/27/2024]

The single most underrated album in the Costello catalog. Nearly as good as Imperial Bedroom, with of course a far different approach which surprisingly suits Elvis and these songs. [First added to this chart: 11/27/2024]

What a startlingly wonderful album this must have been to listeners in '83 - and they spent the next three years (and more) improving upon it. [First added to this chart: 11/27/2024]

United Kingdom Yes
I consider Drama the end of the Yes main sequence, because this is really a different band, even more than the Buggles Yes was. Chris Squire's "It Can Happen," a piece of '80s-fied prog, is my favorite track here, though "Leave It" and "Changes" are also great. "Owner of a Lonely Heart?" Biggest comical letdown/fake-out in rock - that blazing guitar opening makes you think it's going to rip into a punk-paced metal barnburner, but then, no, that midtempo snoozefest of the main song comes in. I remember my shoulders slumping with defeat as a youngster whenever that happened the first few times I heard the song. Now it still makes me kinda chuckle, sort of a musical slapstick humor that the band didn't intend but should have. The last 4.5-star album here. [First added to this chart: 11/29/2024]
