The single most important step in the evolution of jazz. At face value, the album's position within the jazz standard canon is obvious. With widely recognizable standards like "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader", this album might seem a little lacking like a slew of too-familiar, classical piano pieces. In a time when jazz musicians were attempting to break free of jazz convention, Miles Davis shatters the fourth wall of melodic structure and creates a novel way to improvise. I'm consciously trying to convey in a way that anyone could relate to when all I want to do is explain all the nuances I've grown to love about this album. After you study standards, listen to the founding genres of jazz and work you're way up to later Miles Davis, be sure to research this album. This is an American Treasure of an Album. A major contribution to music as a whole. [First added to this chart: 11/19/2012]

The warbling vocals that sweep like her fingers against her harp can be hard to see past. The melody strains to keep up with the perfection of the harp and its lyrical accompaniment. Vocal tone and pitch perfection aren't the centerpieces of this album. The lyrics are those clearly spoken words that are muffled behind a door of overpowering violin and harp. Ys, full of SAT words and unique imagery, is one of the best examples of American poetry in song. There is something magical about this album. [First added to this chart: 05/23/2013]

Charles doesn't waste time building emotional tension. Even as the saxophone scantily changes from slow crooning to high energy releases, the music feels characteristically Mingus. Looking back on history, you realize certain things seem to fit together in perfect ways. This is one of the few perfect jazz albums. [First added to this chart: 02/13/2013]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 3% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 89.5/100, a mean average of 89.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 90.3/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.7.

I just realized - you have the oldest album on the site... I didn't know they had LPs in the 1930s.
