Top 94 Greatest Music Albums
by Kupohunter Unknown

I, being a kid raised on alternative, have fallen in love with Indie Rock. If you don't like that kind of music, don't even comment on my chart. Some creative criticism might be good though...

I was raised right here in Illinois. I honestly am not a big fan, but this album is just fantastic. Full of lush strings, sound, lyrics, and endearment, it just makes you all fuzzy inside, its only fault was its obscene length. [First added to this chart: 06/11/2012]

Most indie fans know the story. Depressed guy goes out into the woods to record an album in a little cabin in Wisconsin for 3 months in the winter. He produced a phenomenal album, amazing. The first half of this album is a bit weak, hit or miss, but Skinny Love and Lump Sum come through to keep you listening. When you get to Blindsided, the entire album from then on is PERFECT. The lyrics are a bit jumbled, and their meaning is a bit shrouded in fog, but lyrics are not the only thing that can express feeling. "For Emma" is one of my favorite songs of all time. I have listened to a lot of albums. This is the one of the best. It is like walking in a dark cave, seeing a light, and emerging to see the most beautiful thing on earth. It is like discovering who you are. It is like complaining about a long car ride in the country, but all you have to do is look out the window to make it a whole lot better. It is like the Gettysburg Address, albeit not as short; In something as simple as a speech or an album, a great point is put out there and though it was not supposed to be a definitive point in history, it became one. I found a part of myself listening to this, on the verge of tears of joy. It is for those who feel wiser than they should. [First added to this chart: 06/29/2011]

Let's face it, sample albums are often not taken seriously. They are dismissed as simple "dance" albums, that have little to no musical value. The Avalanches have smashed this stereotype to pieces with "Since I Left You". It feels both new and old, rustic yet refreshing. It really does put music as the focus of well, music, but to understand this, you MUST listen to the full album in one sitting. [First added to this chart: 07/07/2012]

Though musically, it feels very similar to Local Native's Gorilla Manor, I draw many similarities to For Emma Forever Ago by Bon Iver. It becomes very downtrodden and depressing, but emerges from this depression in a different way. Phenomenal, one of Indie Folk's finest. [First added to this chart: 06/11/2012]

Sufjan Steven's 3rd LP, released 2 years prior to his Magnum Opus (Illinois), is a very solid album. It has elements of Illinois, but still has the backwoods folk feel of Seven Swans. This is a great place to start on Sufjan, just be wary of the length. [First added to this chart: 07/07/2012]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 83.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.8.

A good indie rock selection, but it's too new. Try to look for some old indie bands.

Great chart! Excellent variety of music and very original, and some descriptions are pretty good. However, this is mainly from the 2000 until now, and you ought to know that is many fantastic and mind blowing albums in the 60' and the 70', among other decades. I am not saying that the albums you included are bad, in fact, there are some that are totally incredible, really nice. This is only a comment, of course. Also, i really like the predomination of Sufjan Stevens, as it makes your chart really attractive. So, overall nice chart!
