I've been playing this record during my downtime at research. It took me about a month to get through it. Here are my thoughts:
This thing is massive. 360 tracks totally around 6+ hours of sound collage vaporwave, all ending with a really captivating drone finale. The structure of this project is supposed to mirror a Japanese TV station playing throughout the day until the viewer (the listener) turns off the TV. Obviously with a project this long, there are going to be a lot of duds, and there certainly was with this record. Some songs are merely 15-20s of chimes or just a guitar strum. Some songs are old Japanese commercial sound collages. But what made me give this album a positive review is how transportative it is. When I click play on this record in bandcamp, I almost feel as if I'm in Tokyo, working on some business project at my desk with the TV playing behind me. I feel as if I look out the window I can see the business district of Tokyo.
That's the beauty of vaporwave. It's a genre where to goal is to evoke escapism. Not craft hit singles to play at a club, arena anthems, ear worm melodies, etc. It's goal is to make you feel nostalgic for a time or transport you to wherever the artist desires. Truthfully, Sunflower Image does it all. It makes me nostalgic for the 90s and transports me to Japan, a country I've always wanted to visit. The drone finale, "Into the Abyss..." is a somewhat unexpected, but entrancing thriller. It feels like it's what happens inside your TV when you turn it off. Your screen becomes the mirror of something far worse than tailored television: reality.
I'll probably never listen to this again, and if I do find myself going back to it, it'll be years from now. But it was certainly worth the one time listen.
