Top 100 Music Albums of the 1960s by ThePoodleBites Unknown

The nineteen-sixties ... a comparatively strange era of freedom, love, peace, and music. The idealistic 'hippie' scene gave forth to new opinions, ideas, and musical creations/experimentalism that could be expressed for the first time. Censorship often lowered to a minimum. This chart, considering historical impactful as well as the well-conceptualized listening material, is rated upon the albums which I most enjoy listening to as well as appreciate the cultural impact of from one of the greatest musical generations.

Oh, Andy, won't you please come home? The VU & Nico has maintained not only a cult status for almost fifty years, but also a place in every music enthusiast's heart for creativity and poignancy. It is often quoted that although VU & Nico only sold around 30,000 copies on its first issue, it was so influential that just about every person who bought it started a band. "Sunday Morning" begins the album with beauty unequaled in 1967, while the song after it describes the purchase of an extremely addictive narcotic. A psychedelic masterpiece, VU & Nico boasts "Heroin," arguably the Velvet's best song, best composition about escapism, and best two-chord song ever composed, "Venus In Furs," an ode to sadomasochism, and many other counterculture topics that established Lou Reed and John Cale in the music scene forever. The 13th Floor Elevators were Texas' true innovators during the 1960's. Their story is tragic but their music is legendary; their second record on the infamous teal-colored International Artists label, 'Easter Everywhere,' is truly an epic masterwork. The existential "Slip Inside This House" which starts the album is simply the band's best track and arguably one of the best of the decade. The raw energy of "Levitation" and Bob Dylan's favorite version of his song "Baby Blue" also highlight the album. "Nobody to Love," guitarist Stacy Sutherland's highlight, is one of the most amazing soundscapes created in rock music; the final two tracks constitute one of the best album endings ever produced. Although every CD of this is garbage (the master tapes have been destroyed), check out an original vinyl rip (there's a great "Audiophile Edition" on YouTube). [First added to this chart: 03/09/2017]

The Summer of Love, 1967. Sgt. Pepper, the VU & Nico, and countless other classics were debuted that year, yet Forever Changes stands as one of the most genuine, if not the most metaphysical of them all. Psychedelic Rock? Definitely. But the 'garage' side of psychedelia, the '13th Floor Elevators' side if you will, takes a back seat to the raga rock, mind-bending lyrical humor and Arthur Lee's timeless, unique observations. Bryan MacLean's "Alone Again Or" is one of the most mind-numbing, beautiful pieces of music ever recorded. "Old Man," "The Red Telephone," "Bummer In The Summer," "Live And Let Live" (including the infamous snot line), and of course, "You Set The Scene," one of the most perfect album-enders ever cut. Lee, a black musician in the '60s, had every right to be pissed off at the society he lived in. Instead, however, he gave the world one of the most shockingly relevant, revolutionary, and contemplative recordings of all time. 'Forever Changes' is a true psychedelic classic. While "Dark Side Of The Moon" is most certainly my favorite album of all time, the Floyd's debut is a classic of very similar caliber. Starting with "Astronomy Domine," the album wastes no time dropping into Syd Barrett's psychedelic hellish nightmare. The lyrics are poetic and meaningful in a distant and epic way, unlike any other album to follow, save maybe Barrett or The Madcap Laughs. My favorite track might be "Matilda Mother," or "Interstellar Overdrive," which may be the funnest song to play on guitar ever written. [First added to this chart: 05/20/2013]

Good Chart - but no 60`s Chart!
It´s basically a Chart of 70`s artists who started their career in the late 60`s.
Anyway, I was not part of the 60`s.
And finally now that I did a 60`s Chart myself....
It looks pretty much like yours with a focus on the years 1967 - 1969...
So I feel I should improve my rating to 90.

Great chart. I thought I was the only person who loved An Evening With Wilde Man Fischer. I bought it on Vinyl about 20 years ago and it's one of my prized possessions. In a similar vein, I also recommend the work of David Peel, the Godz and the Fugs.
