Top 86 Music Albums of the 1970s

My favourite albums of the 1970s.

A weird error seems to have happened with this chart, so I'll have to extend it to 100 albums again later.

Ooh, babe! "The Wall" is such a wall of over-delivery, but without ever coming across as annoying, embarrassing or as an unintended joke. The music changes from fragile to thunderous and back again countless times with a steady build-up during the whole album until the wall is finally torn down by the end. Never before have emotions been expressed so boldly and never before has an album moved me so much, simply an epic concept album that never stops blowing your mind! Add to this some of the strongest nostalgic memories and you have a clear almost #1 favourite of all time.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Well, Queen is pretty much the product of fantasy. The greatest night you could spend at the opera.

Fills me with joy like no other album. Very uplifting and synth-heavy, extremely unpretentious, but underneath is hidden an earnestness and a glimpse of the troubled Brian Wilson's honest personality. I love you too, The Beach Boys!

The tensions between the members really come across here. It's a disoriented album where the live performances don't really belong together with Phil Spector's overproduction on certain tracks. However, I love the sporadic feel of the album and it still contains enough gems to top most albums made today.

My introduction to Simon & Garfunkel was through the "The Essential Simon & Garfunkel" compilation on which nearly all songs from this album appear, unlike with the other S&G albums. That's probably why I feel more nostalgic about this one. Sadly, I don't think any folk-act will ever sound as beautiful as Simon & Garfunkel harmonizing together, but they apparently needed to cross that bridge over troubled water and split up after this album.

The Beatles are no more and John Lennon is left disillusioned. The dream is over. John knew he needed to carry on. I need to carry on. We're all gonna carry that weight, remember? It's an emotionally painful album about us humans in our most fragile situations. Nothing really can help me better through hard times than this confessional journey.

Absolutely the way to go for George Harrison to release an overwhelming triple album (double, if you exclude the not so necessary jam part) after The Beatles split up. No longer was he kept in the shadow and no longer did he need to listen to any wah-wahs from either Paul or John. He was free to go crazy and so he did (and with Phil Spector as producer, things went only even crazier)!

David Bowie ch-ch-ch-ch-changes musical direction (again). It's not the weird David Bowie yet, but still quite experimental with the weird "The Bewlay Brothers" and the spacey intro of "Andy Warhol", not to mention the fuckload of different musical influences. Especially love the album's old-fashioned style. And then there is "Life on Mars?", a total classic.

Jeff Lynne's creative burst. 70 minutes full of ELO quality including the interesting "Concerto for a Rainy Day"-suite based on weather and how it affects mood change. Lovely album to get lost in.

Any chart with this much Beatles and Floyd is a good one...

Ooops! Actually thought I had added "A New World Record" already. "On the Third Day" and "Face the Music" should be here as well since they're both better than the first two ELO albums. The way I'm building up charts currently doesn't necessarily make much sense if any!

Also, I expect Supertramp and Alan Parsons to be here someday, if not, they'll at least end up somewhere just outside the decade chart.

Surprising to see this much ELO listed without including "A New World Record". Also would expect to see some Supertramp or Alan Parsons.

Oh, yeah. No "Who's Next" is a mistake. It used to be on my overall chart. I'll probably add it tomorrow!

Btw, my chart's currently not finished (other essential albums missing)!
