The records that I love the most deliver in emotional impact. It's a sweeping vision to be sure but at a very human level. Impeccable songwriting meets brilliant musicianship track after track.

Superunknown was a remarkable step forward for an already badass rock group. The musicians reach into your consciousness and shatter its foundations. There's really nothing like Cornell's incredibly nuanced singing or Thayil's unpredictable and liberating solos.

From the 70s until the mid 00s rock music dominated the airwaves. In some ways, every band was paying tribute to this incredible album. Zeppelin perfected the drifting, rambling blues rock of an earlier era to encompass the volatility and excitement of the modernist age.

The best indie album ever made. A fondness for knick-knacks of the past, old attic history collections, and innocent love pervades alongside a fear of the great beyond. Musically, Stevens mixes Neil Young and Phillip Glass to great consequence.

A highly confessional record, Grohl furiously indicts while asking for strength and support from the (rightfully?) unsympathetic crowd. The music is filled with angst and distortion but there's also the sheen of the chance to bounce back and start anew. Probably no other album makes you feel more alive.

Some of the most organic music ever written. Each instrument is carefully layered as part of an overall texture that waxes and wanes according to the mood of the moment. This is not to mention Van Morrison's beautiful, soulful singing.

An opera about the loss of innocence at the height of the riff-based song structure and choreographed with incredibly delicate sound work. Try listening on a rainy day.

There are moments on this album that contemporary musicians still haven't figured out. Even aside from all this, there's a unique Cold War feeling to the songs that is irreplaceable.

So much brilliant effort put into this chart!! Your notes are extensive and personal (especially those for Illinois!), and though looking at the first couple of picks I got worried that I'd find things a little too classic-rock orientated, the smattering of jazz and hip hop provided a refreshing change from the rest of your picks. Well done!
