So there are lots of great singer-songwriters out there who make great music, but their lyrics rarely work on paper as poetry. Here's a list of the excellent song-smiths whose lyrics work well on the printed page, whose lyrics least require the scaffolding of music to maintain their power.

I'm choosing the album that best represents their poetic talents, not necessarily their best album over-all.

No Bob Dylan or Jim Morrison. Sorry Guys.

Yeah I have a book of Dylan's lyrics and I've read them as poetry and analyzed them and all that high school stuff in years past. So I view him as a pretty poetry based writer. I can't say I'm really smart about the intricacies of poetry. I'm not scholarly for sure.

Thanks for commenting Mercury, if this was a greatest lyricists list Dylan would certainly be included, but this list is about poetry. Pretty much all of Dylan's stuff requires the scaffolding of music to work, maybe "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" is an exception? But not really. What's your poetry background?
