This is seriously painful for me to listen to; I've suffered from depression myself and can imagine just how dark life must have been for this man when he recorded these songs - but I can ONLY imagine it going on and on and on, with no sign of daylight. There are certain tracks on which he keens like a wounded animal - is the 'Black-eyed Dog' which he recorded for a projected but never completed fourth album Nick Drake himself, destroying him from the inside? Howling at the 'Pink Moon' that's surely going to get him sooner or later? (and it did). Sort of Sylvia Plath set to music - and, as with that great doomed poet, there were tiny mirages of light in these extended suicide notes.

Whereas her friend above seemed to be almost embracing his doom, Sandy Denny seemed to be trying to find a way through hers, though whether by accident or design, she didn't survive too much longer. This is probably her most commercial set, and probably her best-produced. It even produced a single, 'Listen, Listen', that became a Tony Blackburn Record of the Week! (Who knew?) That didn't make it a hit, though, and Sandy remained a cult heroine with a distinctly ambivalent attitude to the ideas of living, loving and making music.
Gentle and sad, but warm and beautiful - all these qualities and more are to be found here, for the sensitive, patient listener.

My second favourite of his fantastic five 70s albums, with the superlative 'Superstition' as the lead single, followed by the even more successful, but to me inferior, 'You Are The Sunshine Of My Life' beloved of summer season singers everywhere (eat your heart out, Paul McCartney). Nonetheless, there's plenty to get your teeth into here if you're the religion-and-politics type, and a whole lotta funkin's goin' on even on the sad songs - 'Tuesday Heartbreak' has been described as the happiest break-up song ever written. But if you like your love songs with a bit of smooch, the closing track, to my mind, is far superior to the opener.
