Top 57 Music Albums of the 1980s by Boltzmann (2020)

One less 10/10 this decade, but boy, are they important. The '80s saw the rise of dance-pop and hip hop which - needless to say - have had an everlasting impact on music. Meanwhile we saw rock split up: post-punk with their illusion of undergroundness, who realized shortly after the end of the '80s they were mainstream too all along; new wave who liked the sound of Joy Division a bit too much, and embraced their cheesiness very early on; hardcore punk and heavy metal that became almost indistinguishable after thrash was invented; and noise rock, which proved to be the only one that was actually interesting. The actual underground meanwhile was working on house and techno and everything that came from that. But that's another story for another decade.

First two are 10/10, 3-14 are 9/10, the rest 8/10 (which I haven't ordered properly yet), and the only ones of the decade that are.

Madonna gave women a voice. Not figuratively, but literally (okay, also figuratively I guess). Her vocal style was unheard of (also figuratively and literally). She didn't want to be one of the boys by copying originally male-dominated genres or be a male fantasy by sounding exeggeratedly like a girl; she made a sound that would be women's own, and men can like it, but don't have to, while still embracing the femininity of her voice. And that was a first for the western world. Maybe except for Kate Bush.
Production-wise it follows Prince; how else were you planning to make a hit in the '80s?

It's clear that they made the genre really into a thing. The beats would get endlessly copied for decades to come, and the delivery for years until more laid back styles came into fashion. [First added to this chart: 09/05/2018]
