Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s
by mrmcrook
The 90's was a fascinating decade. Grunge dominated the mainstream and became an added genre for those of us who mainly loved Metal and music of the heavier nature.
My list used to have a lot of compilations. There's still some in there but I'm trying to ween them out.
Any footnotes are just personal ramblings for my own entertainment.
And to remind me of the joy the music brings before all memory is erased.
My top 100 from the 368 albums from the 90's I own

91.53* My favorite Nirvana album. Even though it's categorized as a compilation I don't consider it to be. All songs on this are fucking fantastic. No commercial shine. I don't even label this as grunge. Most of this is great rock n roll.

87.50 I've got 'Flock. Best of the Mutton Birds' on CD. It's one of my favorite CD's. My very favorite. This is the first of the studio albums I've acquired. It's got 4 of the songs which are on the 'Best of'. But the rest which I hadn't heard are top notch as well. Fucking overall great CD. It's one of those unexplainable things, but there can be albums or bands that just resonate with you. The Mutton Birds seem to do that with me. It's like the frequency they emit just permeates through me. One of the best ever NZ bands in my opinion 08/24

86.50 Had on cassette back in the day. 30 years missing. Stoked to have again. The great thing with Danzig is they do have a sound of their own. I found this album goes down a deeper, slightly darker road than with Lucifuge. Even though a few songs are of a slower, almost heavy ballad like nature, his voice is so well suited that they detract nothing from the album. If anything, they give it more substance. Danzig is fucking great.

84.50 Totally unique when this first came out. One of a kind. Supreme rulers of genre blending by incorporating heavy funk bass lines, rap lyrical and some hard metal rhythms. The killer tracks (Bombtrack, Killing in the Name Of, Bullet in the Head,) are exactly that, absolute killer. Some not so much as it's a bit to similar sounding. Original fury. Marvelous

84.44 This is the soundtrack of the apocalypse set to industrial metal. Absolutely fucking fantastic. Heavy as fuck. Most tracks just ooze supreme specially the title track & NWO. Last two tracks let it down a bit but overall, a must have album for anyone who likes music of a heavier nature. Side note; Ministry is the best concert I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot)

82.72 This is more metal than grunge even though they seemed to be lumped into the grunge genre. One of the best albums of the era

82.27 Screaming trees should of been bigger. Mark Lanegan is one of the finest singers with his melodic grunge rock vocals (even though I wouldn't call this grunge at all). This is a hidden gem from that era. Rock you can drift away to.

78.727* Not the best but definitely not a bad Motorhead album. Bit under rated & under appreciated. Lot of good songs on this. Opener 'Stand' is a cracker. His collaboration with Ozzy is great. Could of shelved the cover of 'Cat scratch fever' but overall if your a Motorhead fan, not a bad one to add to the collection 11/25

I always enjoy a chart that's different from mine, versatile, and favors personal subjective choices over "pop" orientation. Good stuff.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The value of compilations, how good Dopes To Infinty is (even if it is not in my decade chart t hods a respectable position in my yearly chart), and I had the same experience with NMH including first hearing of them through BEA....and I need to get around to a Headless Chickens album - heard a lot of their songs over the years and Gaskrankenstation is an all time favourite

This is a unique and very interesting chart. While I haven't included many compilations or live albums on my own charts, your rationale for doing so makes sense. Lots of stuff here I've never heard before, so I'm looking forward to sampling some of your selections that are less familiar to me, starting with your #1 pick.
