Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s
by mrmcrook

The 90's was a fascinating decade. Grunge dominated the mainstream and became an added genre for those of us who mainly loved Metal and music of the heavier nature.

My list used to have a lot of compilations. There's still some in there but I'm trying to ween them out.

Any footnotes are just personal ramblings for my own entertainment.
And to remind me of the joy the music brings before all memory is erased.

My top 100 from the 369 albums from the 90's I own

86.94 A magnum opus. This album is full of perfectly constructed tracks which segue brilliantly into each other. A masterpiece in it's own right. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

83.75 Discovered Beth Orton at 'The Big Day Out' playing mid afternoon on the secondary stage. I was lying on the grass having something to eat before indulging on the bourbon and mind altering substances I had to see me through the evening and night. I knew none of her music. But it was so hypnotic and serene. It fit the mood so perfectly and she has the most beautiful voice. I was hooked. When something sounds that good before you've taken your drugs, you know your onto a great thing. Queen of alt folk [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

82.91 Driving rhythms right through. I don't like putting music into sub-genres but if we're going to lump this into the nu-metal category it ranks as one of the superior albums of that genre. One flaw is that it does have a very similar feel throughout but finishes with a nice change of pace with 'December'. Very under rated and deserves more credit than it's ever had. 82.30 Saw Shihad for the first time as support for Motorhead during the 1916 tour. That was long before this. But I knew from seeing them they'd do well. And this is there pinnacle. All hail Shihad. Shihad's magnum opus. Best they've made. Best metal/hard rock album to come out of NZ. A bit top heavy, second half leveling off a bit but overall this is a fantastic album. If you like metal, get it. You wont be disappointed 01/24 [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

81.81 This is the where they started to expand their sound and style and it upped their game in my opinion. There were the bangers, but many tracks also oozing a hypnotic serenity. It was from this album they became the undisputed kings of electronic music [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

81.66* From their golden era. Lot of their best songs on this. Even the songs that weren't commercially pushed have that classic Chili's sound. That's what makes this one of their better albums. But like most Chili albums, too long, they should of cut out about 4 tracks. Then they'd have had an absolute classic. 05/25 [First added to this chart: 11/01/2023]

81.10* All Filter songs I knew I really liked. But for some reason I always bypassed getting their albums. I think I thought that a whole album of their style wouldn't do it for me as Filter have a sound unto themselves which gives them a unique flavor. I seemed to have been wrong. Great heavy rhythms. Great album. 11/25 [First added to this chart: 05/26/2023]

80.35 I saw him during this tour. Decent concert. This is a good showcase of his earlier days. Good album for the casual fan. Probably what I think of as his golden era. Lot of good songs. I prefer the studio version of a few but overall a decent listen. He does come across as a bit of a twat with some of his onstage banter but we can overlook that as he was going for shock value. I always enjoy a chart that's different from mine, versatile, and favors personal subjective choices over "pop" orientation. Good stuff.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The value of compilations, how good Dopes To Infinty is (even if it is not in my decade chart t hods a respectable position in my yearly chart), and I had the same experience with NMH including first hearing of them through BEA....and I need to get around to a Headless Chickens album - heard a lot of their songs over the years and Gaskrankenstation is an all time favourite

This is a unique and very interesting chart. While I haven't included many compilations or live albums on my own charts, your rationale for doing so makes sense. Lots of stuff here I've never heard before, so I'm looking forward to sampling some of your selections that are less familiar to me, starting with your #1 pick.
