Let's first make it clear that there is a distinction between hip hop and rap. Hip hop is a genre of music, and rap is a technique to use your voice as an instrument by speaking at a relatively fast pace and more fixated on rhyming than when singing. Hip hop can exist without rap too and vice versa (this is why some early albums that fall into the category of disco are not on this list). Hip hop consists of a beat that emphasizes the first and third beat. It's basically a slowed down version of disco; it's therefore to disco, what metal is to rock.
