Slow rock 'n' roll so that an extra beat could be squeezed between the even and odd beats. This created a more dramatic effect, and left plenty of room for overly ambitious excursions with the electric guitar. Annoyingly, strictly speaking rock ballads have the same structure, which can be found often in songs by The Beatles... the difference should be obvious though. And to make matters worse, often with hard rock bands, they also squeeze in a couple of regular tracks with a regular rock 'n' roll pattern, alongside just a lot of overall experimentation with on which beats they put emphasis - especially in the '80s.
