My formative music years were the eighties and early nineties where I listened to mostly post punk and new wave, so this album being number 1 on my Greatest Music chart might seem odd. At the time, I wasn't big fan of some genres including folk and rap. However, as I grew older my musical mind opened up (the internet helped) and I was soon listening to a lot of different sounds. When I first heard this album from Neutral Milk Hotel I was totally blown away. Singer Jeff Mangum has this very melancholic but luring voice that make this one of the most beautiful albums ever released. The fact that this is a concept album and was made with an array of different musical instruments including a singing saw makes it all the more brilliant.
Live Moment: Seeing Neutral Milk Hotel play on their reunion tour in 2014.

What more can be said about this album other than it has another lead singer that has a voice that lures you into the music. This is a record that was an innovative bright light at a time when post grunge and rap metal were killing the rock music industry. [First added to this chart: 07/24/2022]

U2 were my favourite band in my teen years and this will always be my favourite album of theirs. U2 have other albums that are more popular with both fans and critics but this record was the one that made me a mega fan and the most endearing to me.
Live Moment: Watching U2 play "Bad" at Live Aid and seeing Bono jump into the audience to dance with a girl while the rest of the band played patiently while privately seething in anger.

A lot of people will disagree but Jack White is the best guitarist of his generation. Don't fuck with Meg White either. Never heard two people make such a racket....but in a very good way. [First added to this chart: 07/24/2022]

Consensus is this is the greatest U2 album but for me it is second to The Unforgettable Fire (see above).
Live Moment: Seeing U2 live on the Joshua Tree tour with Bono's arm in a sling because of a separated shoulder which he sustained when he slipped on a stage a few nights earlier.

Same comments for this album as the comments for the Joshua Tree. Depeche Mode were my second favourite band during my formative years.
Live Moment: Depeche Mode's Toronto gig on their Black Celebration tour was my first ever major concert.

Gabriel perfects his art rock/afrobeat fusion, and with the help of some slick videos that got heavy airplay on MTV, plus Kate Bush guesting on one of the beat duets ever made, make this album a masterpiece.
Live Moment: The only time I saw Peter Gabriel was on his So tour at the Busch missed maple Leaf Gardens.

I remember in high school seeing the name "Jesus and Mary Chain" etched into a desk in a classroom and wondering who the hell were they. Thought it must be some new punk band and then I heard their music and it was listening to someone run their fingernails down a chalkboard. Then I listened again and could hear these beautiful 60's pop melodies underneath the feedback and thoughi this is genius. It was the beginning of my love affair with Noise Pop and Shoegaze.
Live Moment: I never saw JAMC live back in the day but got to see them on their Psychocandy 30th anniversary tour.

Loving the comments about your first experience hearing each album. I can't stand U2 and it's almost enough to make me give them a second chance.
