This was probably the last Really Big Year™ for albums before smartphones and streaming services started to take over. This was also the tail-end of the Nugaze Era™, and also the peak of the Great Pop Songwriter Shakeout™, after which only two or three people wrote hit songs. (I think they're down to just that one Swedish guy now.) It was also the beginning of The Golden Age of Adding Trademark Symbols To Arbitrarily-Named Time Periods™, which is somehow still going on as I type this.

It's hard to describe this one, and indeed it's hard to describe Barwick's sound in general, but if someone put a gun up to my face and insisted, I'd probably say something like "ambient vocal looptronica," but also "very pretty-sounding." And then the guy with the gun would probably shoot me anyway, because I just have one of those "shootable" faces.
