This was probably the last Really Big Year™ for albums before smartphones and streaming services started to take over. This was also the tail-end of the Nugaze Era™, and also the peak of the Great Pop Songwriter Shakeout™, after which only two or three people wrote hit songs. (I think they're down to just that one Swedish guy now.) It was also the beginning of The Golden Age of Adding Trademark Symbols To Arbitrarily-Named Time Periods™, which is somehow still going on as I type this.

French Films were a indie-pop band from Finland, so I guess they just thought this was a better band name than "Finnish Guitars and Keyboards." Personally, I think they were wrong, but I'm not from Finland. (I'm also not from France, but you wouldn't have known that if I hadn't just told you, or if you actually heard me trying to speak French.)
