That's right, the best album of 1982 isn't even an LP, but rather an EP. To be more precise, the best EP of all time. Five surprisingly varied, catchy, enchanting, and energetic songs. If they had come up with five-seven more songs of equal quality in the same idiom, this would be one of the top ten albums of all time. As it is, it's just five songs, but how great they are. No wonder they eventually took on the world. This was as good as they ever got, although Murmur was also fantastic. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

Simple Minds grew by leaps and bounds over their first three albums, developing into the band that made the prior year's Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call and then this magnificently sparkling (more than the subsequent album, heh) gem. This is absolutely Jim Kerr's most charismatic hour. A triumph of the New Romantic style, even though SM couldn't be pigeonholed into that box. Forbes, MacNeil, Burchill, and Gaynor build cathedrals of sound for Kerr to hold forth in. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

Wherein Kate takes her muse into new jungles of weird but also uses technology to sound all the more grown up and resonant. A tour-de-force of the capabilities of a human voice willing to try anything - highly reminiscent of Tim Buckley's Star Sailor in that sense. And of course she would achieve something even greater three years later. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

I was remember being surprised at how artistically mature this jewel was when I heard it back in the late '80s for the first time. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

Prince's first 5-star masterpiece, the full blooming of his early synth-funk aesthetic. "Delirious," which still really gets on my nerves, can't ruin it, because there's an hour of great music to help you forget it. The last 5-star album on this list. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

Not as great as the Model-Forces-Happy run, but still quite the artistic achievement. "Beyond Belief" and "The Loved Ones" might be Elvis's catchiest moments, and there are lots of rich benchmarks alongside them. If I spend too much time thinking about this, I may have to elevate this to 5 stars... [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]

The only problem with this brilliant collab with the legendary Todd is that Duncan and Roger should have been there (and stayed there for the subsequent 42 years, lol). There are a couple of awkward relative duds here, but at least five masterpiece tracks - "President Gas," which is probably my favorite Furs songs, "Love My Way," "No Easy Street," "Only You and I," and "Forever Now" - to more than balance them out. The finest hour of this great band who are still making fine music. Richard Butler sounds nearly identical to how he did in '82. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2024]
