The post-2010 "big 3" has been said to be Kendrick, Cole and Drake. I think it's bullshit and empty marketing. If you ask me, the better, more artistically hip-hop big 3 is Carti, Denzel, and Joey. These have gotten more natural acclaim without ever being forced into a GOAT conversation (Bladee is too R&B and Quadeca too singer-songwriter). You know what, subjectively speaking, I would slit Hopsin in there. And now you readers only feel half as annoyed as me when people pretended that Drake was anything better than abysmal.
But enough of that, what makes Denzel wanna the better hip hop artists this generation is his ability and focus on the genre. His last album, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, remains my favorite rap album in years, definitely the most inventive with trap, hard-hitting drums, and varying jazz fusions. Imperial still carries the crown for me in his discog, but still, these two are more-so decade-defining hip hop in terms of standards.
Now, Denzel also has his mixed bags imo, and King of The Mischievous South Vol.2 is a new one. It's a pretty easy album to listen to as the beats aren't inventive but rather straightforward, and Denzel isn't saying anything quotable. Most of the songs missed the it-factor, even if they were good.
The biggest let-down, despite Denzel not giving us his pen-game, is the big features. I don't know if it's intentional with these projects but I am not a fan, especially the horrible Ty Dolla $ign one, resulting in probably the worst song in Denzel's career.
My favorites are Ultra Shxt, primarily for its videogame-esque sample being executed very melodically. Both the short but flamey Lunatic Interlude and Sked also shone, containing the best chemistry with features Project Pat from T6M and Kenny Mason. Lastly, the thunderous Hit The Floor is obviously (in addition to Ski Mask feature) early punk rap XXXTentacion worship, and although it won't reach the classics like #Imsippinteainyohood, it did its job solidly.
