Tracks like Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Save Me, Play the Game, are all nice sounding tracks, but they don't really have anywhere exciting to go. Nonetheless, this is a consistently pleasant listen, with 10 good songs, possibly a few great ones in there too. ***Definitely in terms of Queen's older sound, Dragon Attack comes closest with it's awesome bassline and cool middle eight."  [+]  Reply

I really like 'Zooropa' and 'Lemon', 'Babyface' is a bit weak, musically and lyrically. 'Numb' would quite happily sit on a Radiohead album so must have sounded way ahead of its time in 1993. "As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great...""As most mainstream pop albums, it's fairly inconsistent. There's a lot of filler (How you get the girl, This love, I know places), but the songs that do work are pretty good, I must admit. I think that the run of "Blank space", "Style", "Out of the woods" and "All you had to do was stay" is great, and those four are the best tracks on the album by a mile. The second half, though, is a little lackluster, but then again, I don't think "1989" was ever designed to be more than a collection of singles. Some of them are great, yes, but the album as a whole doesn't hold for too long. It's not incredibly original either, since "Welcome to New York" rips off the piano riff from "Baba O'Riley", "Wildest dreams" seems like a cover of a Lana del Rey song, "Shake it off"'s beat is heavily reminiscent of Pharrell Williams's "Happy", "Clean" sounds a lot like Lorde and "How you get the girl" is so Katy Perry. The worst thing about these influences is that they're blatantly displayed but Taylor doesn't try to do anything unique with them on the aforementioned tracks. On the other hand, the lyrics are not incredibly mature, but they often manage to sound relatable and nuanced enough, and like I said, the tracks that work are really good, especially "Style", which I think it's her best song to date without a doubt. So to sum up, I would say "1989" is an alright diversion with a couple of gems, but it's far from being a memorable album."  [+]  Reply

This is an "alt-country" album of unrequited love and love lost. It's both full in the firm grip of love and being choked by it. The highlights of love's anguish come on "oh my sweet carolina", "come pick me up" and . On "oh my sweet carolina", with backing vocals from emmylou harris, ryan is a lost stray in the big city without his love singing "I was trying to find me something / But I wasn't sure just what / Man I ended up with pockets full of dust ". In "come pick me up", ryan is love sick and love vexed, unfurling his venom in the chorus: "Come pick me up / Take me out / F*ck me up / Steal my records / Screw all my friends / They're all full of shit / With a smile on your face / And then do it again / I wish you would ". Or on "don't ask for the water", where a woman caused him to "hate this old place / And what it represents / And I hate who I was / And who I ended up since / But if you learned how to swim in case you'd drowned / Don't ask her for the water / Cause she'll swallow you down ". "shakedown on 9th street" is like a well-placed joke in the dearth of a heart-wrenching drama, a welcome respite about a dust-up over a woman. But that and "to be young (to be sad)" are really the only foot-stompers. This offering is truly for the heartbroken and the weight will fill you up the most when you're feeling your worst. heartbreaker's less about the words to describe love's impact than the feeling, like the quiet-yet-heavy piano in closer "sweet lil gal (23rd/1st)" as he sings a sentiment at the heart of the album -- "when you're lonely, she makes you feel nice"."  [+]  Reply

High Water is the other classic but I prefer this one live with a different arrangement. Only track that I don't love is "Summer Days". It's one of the more popular tracks & I usually love ole 50's retro style tunes but it's just alright to me. I love the rough jagged voice throughout much of the album.
