This album has seemed so dumb for me to me for so long. Dry, repetitive, bland, you name a criticism that has been stated below and I have had that opinion. But after just coming back to it again and again periodically, it finaly clicked, as all good albums do. There is something really seductive in the layered guitars and strangely static songwriting. The songs don't really go anywhere at all, and it can be hard to understand why at first. But I eventually realized that this album is just the musical distillation of small town life. The cover, the backstory, etc all point toward it, but even structure wise, it feels meandering and aimless, waiting for something to happen. But nothing ever does, and things are always the same, and yet you can't help but love your little nondescript cornfield town. I don't think it's a coincidence that Talk Talk's later works and this album have both made their genius apparent to me around the same time. Though they are different in many ways, they both have a kind of featurelessness to them, as described a but above. They are unstructured and meandering, and if you are not listening attentively, it feels like the same thing over and over. But just as there is beauty in the use of silence by Talk Talk, there is beauty in the use of repetition by American Football. 80/100"  [+]  Reply

The impact this album is going to have cannot be predicted, but I do have these thoughts so far: Never Fight A Man With A Perm is killer beyond all comprehension; Danny Nedelko is a fantastic middle finger to the right wing press's narrative of the last decade; Samaritans speaks to me and to men in general in a way that music has never done before, making you want to sing-a-long and cry all at the same time; Great finally delivers the Brexit punk anthem we've been after for ages. Even then, there's so much to unpick here. Every song has as much depth as the last one, every lyric feels like it deserves a whole essay just to explain its significance. The music too. Man. I don't even know where to start. Idles have taken there big ol' grungy hardcore post-punk medley sound and fleshed it out into something that nods to all of its influences yet feels highly appropriate and effective, and more than anything else, rocks like no god damn tomorrow. Packs the energy to make you want to jump around the room and smash up your kitchen. Smacks you right in the feels with the intensity of its lyrics. Reassures that it knows just what you're going through and what you've been through, and finally offers you an answer. This is the record we've all been waiting for in Britain. An optimistic, angry mantra to unite around - and dance around to as well. Idles pulled it out the bag and smacked it right out of the park. Best record of 2018? At first you may not totally feel the groove but it's hinted at, then the next time through you hear the groove and the unique flavor of all the songs, then later through it you hear more and more intricate little fillips and details and nuances. So, he had been on Sheik Yerbouti, Remain In Light, this album which everybody seemed to love...and there were maybe 300 people there, and he was playing with a recorded rhythm track so when we got him to do an encore, he jus...""I saw Adrian Belew play a bar in Iowa City in...had to be...1981 or 82. So, he had been on Sheik Yerbouti, Remain In Light, this album which everybody seemed to love...and there were maybe 300 people there, and he was playing with a recorded rhythm track so when we got him to do an encore, he just played the first two songs on the tape again. He said, "Who here remembers their first acid trip?" and we whooped and hollered. Amazingly small-time performance for a guy who could play arenas with three different world-class bands at the time. His vocals and his whole personality just transformed what King Crimson was capable of--Americanized the whole operation, and for the good. This album was completely on trend at the time, with the talky prose poem over music like Laurie Anderson etc, the Talking Heads-style funk on the opening track, the anagram song title like Eno had done, this was working out iterations of ideas that were in the air at the time. But Fripp was working out his own ideas musically, and his output in these years was very diverse, from his Frippertronics stuff to the album with Daryl Hall and the League of Gentlemen album. He had done the spiritual study with JG Bennett, and he was coming out with all this diverse product, plus the alternate tuning, and pretty soon he started giving holistic guitar clinics to...anybody who wanted to sign up. Every interview he gave was like words from an oracle, and every album was an important statement. Discipline, for the crowd I was hanging with, was a monolithic, landmark album, we didn't so much listen to it as study it. Stands up pretty well after all these years."  [+]  Reply
