However, I think it mana...""I've been listening to this non-stop since it leaked 2 days ago and I think I made up my mind. Some are saying this is their best, but I honestly don't think it tops Sound of Silver; Sound of Silver was their peak and I don't think they'll make something better than that. However, I think it manages to be better than their other 2 records. This statement will become the most common one when talking about American Dream, but it's their darkest album to date, and you can feel throughout the record an evolution to their sound. Of course there are still over-the-top dance songs like "Tonite", "Call the Police" and the post-punk-ish "Other Voices", "Change Yr Mind" and "Emotional Haircut", but even then (especially the latter), they sound "heavier" in some way than their first 3 albums. The bookend tracks as well as the title track are beautiful. They provide a very emotional side of LCD that I think hadn't been fully explored before (except for "New York I Love You"). And even "How Do You Sleep?" which is the best song in American Dream and provides one of the best buildups ever in their discography, sounds much darker than similar songs in previous records. "I Used To" on the other hand sounds a lot like a Joy Division / goth era The Cure song and I fucking love it. I really really enjoyed this. Definitely one of the best albums of 2017. I had high expectations and even then, it managed to be even better than I ever expected. 3/4 of my favorite tracks weren't released as singles which was a good thing considering this year many bands decided to nuke us with singles. As a whole, American Dream simply blows my mind. Best songs: "oh baby", "how do you sleep?", "american dream", "black screen""  [+]  Reply

Unlike other madonna albums that sound like singles & filler, this sounds like an "album" -- a thought-out, cohesive idea. And it's pretty solid for a pop-electronica album. "drowned world / substitute for love" is humble and almost brooding with its shuffling backing beat breaking with madonna's passion near the end. "ray of light" is a kickin' club track as is "skin". "frozen" is easily the best track though, haunting even in hummed, unspoken word, beautiful with the opening notes. "how can life be what you want it to be? / You're frozen when your heart's not open." She sounds sad and hopeful and earnest. (The video matched the song's mood well, too.) "the power of good-bye" is a good epilogue to "frozen", playing off of the previous song's mood and content with an acoustic guitar skeleton while learning to say good-bye. The album trails off at the end, but doesn't break the cohesive thread, so the last 2 only-decent songs can be forgiven. It comes off as a successful experiment."  [+]  Reply

Perfection!!!! 10 minutes of sonic excitement. You never know where it will go. It ebbs, It flows, the lyrics are brilliant and mysterious. They pulled off what prog rock pioneers have been trying to do for decades and they are not even a prog rock band. Dave Navarro's solo is the best solo ever as well! Perfectly in harmony with the song and still showing off. it's not even really a solo. Just another bridgethat happens to be a guitar lead! I've heard it countless times and still hear new things when I put on headphone. And then they follow it up with ..Then She Did which is epic and beautiful in it's own way. The verse that compare Perry's dead mother to Xiola Blue who has recently commited suicide are heart breaking! "She was unhappy Just As You were! Unhappy just as you were! Unhappy Just as You Were" True art!!! Oh did I forget to mention Eric Avery's Bass work in those two songs. Try and write something better! I dare you bass players! Oh did I mention the first side with the funk rock racial harmony No One's Leaving and anarchy of Ain't No Right! Sheesh! Greatness!!!"  [+]  Reply

I would argue that this album is softer and perhaps more accessible than Foxtrot and The Lamb, mainly because of Collins' voice (NOT the direction of the band...that would come later). They were just as progressive here as they were on their previous four albums. The album's sound is probably closest to Selling England: Collins sings a lot like Gabriel did on that album (probably because his voice is softer and more soulful), and there's about an equal proportion of ballads and heavier tracks. Collins isn't as edgy a singer as Gabriel, but the band compensates by playing with more aggression on tracks like Dance on a Volcano. Collins' drumming is particularly powerful on this album: he's jazzy and fast. Hell, Los Endos is borderline fusion due to the style of drumwork. This album is a legitimate contender for Genesis' best for two reasons: (1) The musicianship is sharper than ever before, and (2) Even with Gabriel out of the picture, the songwriting and singing didn't take a hit. Remarkably, the band neither improved nor devolved due to Gabriel's departure. That says a lot about a band! I think Gabriel's departure was good for all parties involved. Banks, Rutherford, and Collins would eventually develop a mutual interest in crafting pop songs, and Gabriel had free reign to experiment with styles outside of Genesis' core sound. Both Gabriel and Genesis would knock each other off the charts in the future, FYI."  [+]  Reply
