In some cases I've privileged putting works from different artists over putting several works from a single artist, but in other cases I found this impossible (wilco, springsteen). A list of only 100 has to be representative at best.

Pet Sounds topped my list until I heard this about ten years ago. Essentially perfect, groundbreaking, beautiful, harrowing, serene, chaotic, this hasn't moved from my top spot for years.

The incredible freedom and intensity of these performances is astonishing. Often overwhelmingly beautiful, but also remarkably experimental.

Okay so I didn't pick Revolver. I've listened to them both for years, and Revolver sounds adolescent compared with this. This is darker, prettier, more unified, more consistent...

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Excellent chart! Zen Arcade and Pet Sounds are such great albums. I look forward to listening to Laughing Stock, as I've only listened to one Talk Talk album (Spirit of Eden).
