A symphony of noise, it's simultaneously melodic, unpredicted and even relaxing. It redefined completely what could or couldn't be called music and did it with proficiency and accuracy. The '90s -- and even the 2000's -- would have been fundamentally different if there were no Loveless. [First added to this chart: 01/23/2014]

It is cliché to put it on the top of a list, but it's unavoidable. Thom Yorke's brilliant writing is here at its very peak, filling the songs with his critic but melancholic view of the new times' emotional isolation and political alienation. OK Computer's importance is not only as a work of art but even, I would say, as a social study, for it foresaw what society would become in the new millenium. [First added to this chart: 01/23/2014]

At the same time grunge was exploding in the States and britpop in England, directly from the city of Recife, Pernambuco, a group of young fans of maracatu, punk, tropicália and hip hop started to make the most creative sounds in Brazil since the Vanguarda Paulista of the '80s: it was the wake of Manguebeat.
Chico Science, one of those prophetic figures that appear in music once in an era, sang of the antics of his city and was the symbol of an entire generation. He showed to Brazil that it was still possible to make music political while still renewing. Sadly, he would soon die in a tragic car crash, but leaving behind two of the best albums of all time -- including this milestone of music called Da Lama ao Caos.

Spiritualized, with this record, had the last word in the punk-versus-prog endless fight. Punk's lively and powerful guitar distortions and DIY vocals turned the long, jazzy, complex compositions that defined the production Yes's, Genesis's and such folks less convoluted and snob making it the most forthright and uncomplicated possible.
Even though both proggers and punks still wine about each others' music approach, Jason Pierce could and did perfectly use the best of both worlds and, for that, deserves this place.
