It was almost necessary that after the musical experimentation and absolutely emotional lyricism of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson had a psychological breakdown. Imagine what could have been if SMiLE were finished and released at that time? There would be nothing else to be done with music, the universe would have collapsed with such perfection. Maybe it's my weakness for suicide stories, but there's something in these tense chords, these visceral, soulful lyrics and this whispered (or howling), weeping (or laughing) voice of Violeta Parra that reaches to the depths of my Latin American -- but most of all human -- condition. Be it Violeta, the singer-songwriter, or Violeta, the local culture promoter, or even Violeta, the communist militant, every aspect of this woman seems to fascinate me a bit more every time I come back to her life and work. The tale of the Chilean savant and her hearty songs is, to me, one of those that sum up all that's beautiful, sad and admirable in this world. [First added to this chart: 04/19/2015]

Although there's nothing else to say about this album that haven't already been said, new bands seem never to stop finding new ways to reinterpret what was developed here. The Banana Album has been said to initiate punk, shoegaze, even black metal and a lot else, not to say that has been influential to 99% of the musicians that take themselves seriously. And it is, surely, the first landmark of alternative rock. [First added to this chart: 01/15/2014]

While everyone was singing about free love and heavy drugging in an aimless shout for peace, Arthur Lee decided to make something a bit more significant. In Forever Changes, he questions everything, from the repetition of quotidian to God's kindness. Its melancholic and bittersweet vision really gets you thinking about the meaninglessness of the things we give importance to and makes you think there's no hope for humanity... But in the end, 'You Set the Scene' concludes: "There'll be time for you to start all over". [First added to this chart: 01/15/2014]

This record is the elephant in the music fans' room. Even though it became kinda prohibitted to say the things that comes to the minds of a great deal of people when listenning to Trout with the risk of passing as lowbrow -- which is a fair judgement, i would say --, it remains out most '60 nostalgia chats. Sheepishly accepted in the hall of fame of music critics for its unquestionable influence on the next generations of alt-rockers, this peace-shattering nonsensical one-and-a-half-hour piece of flashy and ofen humourous experimentation is much more than its reputation of originating some of the most filthy, disturbed and bold tentencies in 70s and 80s music -- the best ones, indeed. The truth is that listeners seeking in the '60s legacy something a little more displacing and audacious than the average easy-listening dad-rock sold as the pinnacle of experimantation will recognise that these funky tunes and all-over-the-place improvisations are cool as fuck.
