Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by mightyram

Since my earliest days I used to construct my top 100 singles charts and always shied away from doing top 100 albums- it was just something too difficult to get my head around. Judging a series of tracks, some of which I could love, some so-so, some I might not really like. How did I come to terms with this? Some albums I love but dare not play too often, while others are for certain times, moods, environments, etc.
I decided last year that I had to come to terms with this conundrum and set about developing MY system.
Basically, the top rated album in my charts has the most brilliant tracks, while lower down they may be a combination of load of really good tracks rather than brilliant, or a mixture of brilliant and ok, or not so good. What makes the individual tracks brilliant, good, ok etc- well loads of things, history, memory, what it makes you feel, think ,do etc. We all have albums we love, but some of these have the odd track that we skip, because it does not 'do it. feels out of place etc. It is these albums that can' t atop my chart. Every track and the whole rounded set gets top spots for me.
The whole thing is still development and liable to change and hopefully as I complete some comments on the individual albums some of my ramblings will makes sense to some. Cheers

After the Verves' last album, Urban Hymns, which had loads of highs but was dragged down by a couple of average tracks, this album is altogether more smooth in mood, with a mid-Atlantic feel. Every track is strong and one of the first albums I have to listen to on every beach holiday. Lots of depth going on under the sounds and the production values are extremely high. Saw him on a solo tour about 8 years ago. 5star tracks ; Song for Lovers, Brave New World, You're on my mind in my Sleep, Crazy World, On a Beach and Slow was my Heart. First saw Genesis on the Trick of the Tail tour and loved the album ever since. To a youngster I think Phil Collins has a slightly more voice accessible voice than Gabriel and the songs were easier to get on with. This carried on as Genesis became more poppy and fell away pretty soon after the next album, other than the odd track. In many ways The Lamb is a better album, let down by a few fillers. This is consistent with 5 star tracks Ripples and Los Endos, with Mad Man Moon not far off. [First added to this chart: 04/05/2014]

Wow! Pop at its very best. Wrongly described as New Romantic on some postings, this is pure, clean, brilliant, brave, lush, humorous, big music. Great at parties, great in the car with some of the highest production values you will find anywhere, this works in front of the big hi-fi. Saw them in 1982 and then a couple of times since and then again weeks ago, with a full orchestra which rates as one of the best gigs ever. 5 star tracks Poison Arrow, tears are Not Enough, The Look of Love and All of my Heart. Hearing Anarchy the first time a some strange 6th form do at a young age is still a defining moment for me in music. I had no idea who or what the music was but had to get the info from the DJ. Very next day bought the single on EMI, played it to my mates who thought I was mad. The Grundy episode, going to the local Swimming baths to see them supported by the Clash, the Damned & Johnny Thunders (gig cancelled!), the next singles, the outrage and this album- all pivotal moments. Not always easy to listen to but the power, energy, personal & wide impact means you cannot ignore this as great. 5* tracks- Anarchy, Holidays, God Save the Queen and Pretty Vacant [First added to this chart: 04/05/2014]

Contains the first single (Jeepster) I ever bought, 2nd hand from a schoolmate, so will always have a place in my heart. Bought the LP from another school mate (75p!) and loved the songs, and the great production values. Some of the songs are a bit of the whimsical side, but the groove is always there. Every track is strong and love little things like some of the fade outs eg Get it on. Throw away tracks like Life's a Gas, give you just enough to want more. 5* tracks -Jeepster, Get it on. Surprised myself that this was my top rated Bowie album, was convinced it would by Hunky Dory, but on listening side by side, this comes out stronger and more consistent, more complete in some ways, but with the 'Bowie edge' from the 70's. All tracks strong and pretty remarkable. 5* Wild is the Wind [First added to this chart: 04/05/2014]

My album of the 90's. Great memories of the impact it had in the UK and to me on a personal level. It does have more variation in the track by track qualities than other in my top 10, but this is compensated for some of the highest quality tracks- Wonderwall, Supernova and Don't look back in Anger. I never came from a r'n'b/soul background but this crossed over that style of music with bits of the angry young man stuff left over from Punk in the UK. Its full of energy, passion, with a hint of madness here and there, its brave, noisy and tries loads of ideas out. Seen the band 4 times in different guises starting in the mid-80s, right up until a few weeks ago. The same on stage as on record- great entertainment. Love it. *5 There, there my dear [First added to this chart: 04/05/2014]

This album was released just I became conscious of album music. Can't recall how I ended up with a copy, but guess it was thru reading articles etc in the NME. Liked it straight away and it still sounds good today. *star track -Time [First added to this chart: 04/05/2014]

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 83.0/100, a mean average of 79.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 14.9.

I was actually shocked to see Richard Ashcroft at no 1, it would never have occured to me as a choice for best album ever, but then I suppose Peter Gabriel's first album as best has not occured to many other people either, it's all a matter of taste, and I respect your chart. We have 17 artists in common, inparticular Gabriel, Dexys and Genesis.

Thank you for your kind words on my chart (back in October). Your chart is great and is full of artists and albums we share. I love Genesis' Trick of the Tail, definitely one of their best albums in the whole catalogue. I also like your variety of albums from the 1970s and from the 1990s.

Good start. Like to see Ian Dury. I´m not convinced of "Alone With Everybody". It`s a nice album, but for me not more than that. You certanly have special reminiscence of it.
